Critiquing Pictures

This is not a question, rather a request.
I have placed pictures in my gallery which I would like members to critique.

I don't want to seem rude but they are, for the most part, severely underexposed. I am sure you are aware of this and are looking for suggestions as to why and how to correct it.

Considering the fact that the highlights on the hair are correctly exposed, I must assume your meter is reading the light of to the right of the subject and not off the subject itself. If you meter off the faces, the highlights will be blown out considerably so I would suggest you use some fill flash. It looks like these photos were taken in the brightest part of the day, which is really not a good time to shoot but we do what we can under the circumstances. Fill flash will throw some light on the faces and eliminate the shadows. The picture of the teenager in the baseball cap could also benefit from fill flash as it will eliminate the shadows caused by the bill of the cap. One other suggestion is to go vertical when you are shooting a single person, unless there is a compelling reason not to do so.

Thank you Kerry for the constructive comments. I am new to photography, so I need to know what I am doing wrong. You are right, they are underexposed, but I thought my meter was reading their faces. What do you mean by a fill flash?

Sharon

Look at your flash button on your camera. You will probably have about four settings. One for auto flash, red eye, fill flash and no flash. Set it to fill flash to light up the faces of the people whom you are taking the picture of.

Flash fill mode is a mode where the flash is forced, and is useful for conditions where lighting is less than optimal. If there is low light or lots of shadow or contrast on your subject, flash fill mode uses the flash to evenly light your picture and deliver a great result.

Thank you Brian, I now have a better understanding of fill flash and will check my camera for the mode.

There is always the chance that you might be able to salvage some of these pictures by adding some light with your image editing software. Check it out and see what you can do. If you need help doing this ...... ask someone else. LOL I am a film shooter so I am not very well versed in what I am suggesting you do.
