buying a camera I'm thinking about buying a Rebel xt. Has anyone bought camera equipment on ebay? There seems to be some good prices on kits, but I'm leery about doing it over the computer

I've purchased lots and lots of things on eBay, including two cameras. You just need to be careful, take your time, and follow a few tips: Stick with a seller that has a high feedback score and not lots of complaints. Make sure they list everything that is included with the camera, and that it matches everything that Canon normally includes with the camera (battery, charger, software, cables, etc.) If you are buying in the USA, make sure they state that it includes the full Canon USA warranty. Read all the fine print and make sure the camera is new in a sealed box. Be careful about package deals where they throw in a bunch of accessories like camera bags, tripods and cleaning kits. Many times the "retail value" of these very cheap accessories is inflated to make it look like you are getting a huge deal. Compare the price to prices at other online sellers like bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com. If the price of the eBay camera is several hundred dollars less than theirs, I would be suspicious that it may be gray market or refurbished. Good luck.

thank you. Actually I was looking at a few kits. I also don't seem to see a big difference between the Rebel xt and the Canon EOS D20 other than about 400 dollars for the bodies.

The difference between the XT and 20D is similar to the differences between the film Rebel T2 and Elan 7. Both use the same image sensor/film, metering, and autofocus, but the more expensive body has more durable build and more features for customizing the camera's function.
