Light and Dark Skin Tones Together Hi, I'm gearing up to start a photography business of "untraditional portraits" (ie: natural setting/candid shots instead of stiff posed shots). I have a Nikon D70 with 300mm zoom and some filters. I've yet to buy studio lights or various reflectors, currently using window lights or outdoor settings. My question is about colors and lighting that will compliment an interracial couple. My client is white, her husband a darker african american, and their two children are a perfect mid range of the two. What colors should I have them wear to blend their skin tones? I don't want her to be washed out, nor him too dark? Suggested lighting tricks are also welcome. They're friends of mine and they're sitting for me to practice, but I really want the pics to come out great. Thanks.

Bonnie If you are shooting in hard/contrasty light you may have a problem. But if you are shooting lower contrast, softer light like window light you probably have nothing to worry about. have fun! Charlie

As far as colors go, I would recommend a mid range solid. Like a tan or a beige. Pastels are usually a safe bet, too, but I'm not very fond of the pinks, greens, and yellows. That's just my opinion. Since the children are a good mid-range tone I would recommend setting your metter around them.

Bright green or red will meter well if the light is fairly consistant. If one or your models wears one of these colors it will give you a good balanced reading. Bracketing is wise,...even with digital.

Thank you Charlie, Justin, and Bob for responding. I'm leaning toward the reds and light browns/tans for them to wear, more a barn red color if you know what I mean. I'm glad you agree that natural light would be better. The setting they've chosen is in a room w/ a lot of windows and one red wall. I think sprinkling red in their clothing will be a good accent. If I use green, they'll look like a christmas card. I should only have to use a reflector to bouce some of the window light back on them. Oh and I totally intend to bracket.
