Photography Question

Nicole Kessel

How does this look to you?

I have a very dark gray cat. He's almost a dark silvery blue actually. His fur is very reflective in the sunlight. For the life of me I cannot get his coloring right.

I photograph my other cat under the same conditions and she always turns out beautifully. I have tried natural light, strobes, and flash and nothing seems to do him justice. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?

(I'm attaching my latest attempt... which was part sunlight.. part strobes.)

  Thank you, Natalie! :)

I played around with it in Photoshop some and added some omni lighting. It looks a little more like him, now. I have posted it in my gallery. I will have to try to achieve the same effect with my strobes.

I think it's great, too! Nice one! That's a tough color. They tend to turn sort of purple.

  Thank you, Carolyn!
I thought he would be easy being gray and all... but, getting the right shade of gray has been tough. I really like the way the other one (in my gallery) turned out with the omni lighting in Photoshop. I think it's a keeper! He sure is a handsome fella' but, I could be a bit biased! :)

Natalie, I have a cat like him. His fur is always reflecting...'course that's what he looks like in person. So, I think your shot is just right!

I'm not sure, Angela. He was born feral, in a garden center I used to work. I rescued all six kittens in his liter. I tried to rescue, trap and nueter his B&W mother but, she was just too wild and smart. I wouldn't be suprised if his father was a russian blue, though.

You would never know he was a wild cat at heart. He snuggles up with me every night to go to sleep and he loves hamming it up for the camera! ;)

He's so beautiful Nicole! I have trouble photographing my grey Maine Coon as well. He usually ends up looking "brownish".

Beautiful kitty, Susan! Chester can sometimes look a little brown sometimes, too. Weird...

Thanks so much Nicole :) I only wish I knew why it's so hard to photograph a grey cat!
