Manual, A-Priority, or Auto for D70 portraits

Need opinions on outdoor portrait settings to use on my D70. I have read that using an 85 mm lens is best for portraits because it will soften the background..and bring out the subject. To achieve the proper exposure, would shooting on automatic be the prefered setting? Or...Aperture Priority using the lowest aperture? I'll be using my SB800 flash. I suppose using ISO 200 would work fine? I plan on taking these portraits outside in late afternoon. I would really love some advice on this! Thanks!

I too just used the program setting & they turned out great! Never hurts to experiment though as you can delete off the ones that dont turn out!! Best of luck!
