window light hi. I want to shoot portraits with window light. I dont have any fancy accessories except for a fill reflector and pop up flash on my sony digital camera... which window light is best? I heard "north" window light is the best but what does the "north" refer too? also, is window light from the back, front, or sides the best? I have a reflector so I can reflect light back!

I'll do the first question....put your subject near a window that faces north...:-) It's a more subtle light, not harsh. I would guess that's for the northern hemisphere and a south facing window would be better in the southern hemisphere? Someone help me here. Bob

I use this technique a lot. Using a window that faces north will result in a bluish cast many times. If shooting black and white this won't really matter, but with color, I can always see it, and don't really like it. I have some sheets of really inexpensive cream colored muslin that I hang over an east facing window. This softens the light, but it is still strong enough that you don't need flash. I am using another's computer or I could load some examples. If you are interest I could do that later. There may be a black and white of a pregnant mom and daughter in my selection already loaded on this sight--can't remember. If so, that was taken at 8 in the morning with a large window facing almost due east--no other light. Also, at noon-ish, when the sun is bouncing straight down on the ground, the relected light that comes in a window is soft and needs little adjusting. If you don't like the fall-off on the opposite side you could position your reflector there to add some light to the darker side. Just play and see what you like. Good luck.

You're welcome. Hope it helps. I'm not really sure if I'm explaining well, but I do like the look of window potraits a lot, and so mess with this quite frequently. Flatters everyone you shoot, you know? I was checking, and my gallery does have one of the pregnant mom and daughter, plus "tiny feet," and "one year old boy," and "baby true"-- all taken the way I mentioned. Sorry, they are victims of bad scanning--before digital, you know. But you get the idea of the lighting. I really have to scope out a location before I attempt a portrait, so I can see when the light is good and with what background and all that, but once you start to look for it you will see it a lot and be itching to make someone's picture! I have friends who want joy with their camera every time and anywhere they point it, and don't get why they are disappointed so many times, but it's all about teaching yourself to see that fabulous light.
