Photography Question

affordable studio lights for portraiture

My work is getting and better but my proffits are yet to grow because of equipment, place, and appheaence. I need studio lighting badly! I am using natural light and some regular indoor lighting, thus after 5 p.m. my photos dont look so nice anymore, not to mention, it doesnt matter how good your images are, customers want to be impressed by your equipment, not left feeling like they can pull out the old work light and do their own photos! Charlie, one of the course teachers here, recomended a set to me that cost 2 grand. I dont have that sort of cash! It took me a whole year just to buy my camera! How will I ever get a business going if I have no money to infuse it? What about other less expensive brands, or used? How about ebay, or buying eveything I need individualy over time, where might I be able to do that? I am greatfull fo all help!

Hi Bobbi . . .there are some very affordable and quality equipment on ebay . . . however . . .you will take a risk with it because things can happen in shipping, etc. I have a 3 light Novatron setup and I love it . . . I'm still learning with it but it has made a huge difference in my own satisfaction . . . If you were to buy a new set it would probably cost you around that 2 grand but I know there are sets out there that do not cost that much . .. but you might still be looking at minimum of $500 and probably closer to $1000 dollars depending on where you end up going . . . On Ebay I have seen Steve Kaeser's name come up alot as being a good person to buy from . .. not sure what kind of light set up he has. . . and I have also called calumet(do a search for them to get their website) and I think you could get a reasonable setup from them! Good Luck . . .I can completely understand your frustration because I was there not tooo long ago!

  Hi Bobbi,
I have heard from a few associates that Alien Bees are good and they seem reasonably priced, look here:
http://www.alienbees.com/index.html
They do packages that save money but also sell individual stuff so you can build up as you get more cash.
Regards,
Del

I bought a set from Steve Kaesar's e-bay They're Britek lights. I've heard they are good started lights, and the kit was very reasonable for the 4 light set with softbox, umbrella, etc. I've heard great things about the alien bees, too, but I don't know anything about them. Let me know if you want the info on Steve's store and light kits!

I have the alien bees, the photos in my gallery were made with them. They are perfect for my needs and are easy to transport when I take family photos in their own homes.
