Photography Question

Lisa Carpenter

How do you name your business?

I am so stuck with coming up with a name for my business. I don't have a catchy name, it is Lisa Carpenter, and that sounds boring using my name. But other names can also walk a fine line of sounding cheesy.....any advice?

Well, I don't know if this will help you or not, but I choose something about myself that was different than most people...something that makes me stand out from the crowd. Well, that would have to be my feet. I am known as the barefoot girl, so I named my business Barefoot Photography. I thought I was being original, unfortunately, there are a lot of "Barefoot Photography"s out there. But I just want to know how many of them actually go barefoot 24 7? Oh well.

Well, when I named mine I was trying to think of something that had dual meanings. Something that someone could read and have to think about. My business is not only photography but graphic design as well so the name I came up with was Complementary Images. Complementary has 3 meanings pertaining to the business. 1. The pictures are a complement of yourself and the way you look. 2. Complementary colors are a strong influence in my photography and definetly my design. 3. I can offer complementary or "on the house" prints etc. with my packages to try to draw in business. I realize that most people won't make the connections, especially with complementary colors, but I like it, and I suppose that's all that matters b/c I don't think that too many people choose a photographer on name alone, (unless you're very reputable.) Good luck.

When I first began in Photography I wasn't sure where it would lead me . . .it started with me shooting mostly outdoor scenery on the Kansas Prairie(which is barren and VERY flat by the way). . . Well then I decided to embark on portrait work . . . and the name Prairie Images kind of just stuck with me . .. don't know how "fitting it is" for Senior photography and or Weddings, but several have commented on it. . . Anyway . . . good Luck!

Although I don't have much more advice beyond what Kimberly offered, as an author I've had a lot of practice coming up with catchy titles and thought I'd take a look at your gallery and bio info and see if something struck me as a suggestion, but I don't see anything to click on.

While your last name is a bit lengthy for the purpose, your first name, Lisa, could be combined with another suitable word that begins with 'l' or rhymes with your name and is suggestive of the image you want to promote. Some possible words to play around with in combination with Lisa could be: lights, lens, loft, looking glass, look. While Carpenter is a bit heavy, some words that might be combined with it are: cove, cozy, cottage, crimson, cosmic, contours, contrasts, etc. while sometimes the words 'studio', 'images' or 'digital' could round the name out. The word 'digital' lends itself to all kinds of interesting and catchy combinations. Sounds hard, I know, but actually, narrowing down your choices by limiting it to specific criteria (like rhyme or same first letter) often helps the mind break through mental blocks and jump start back into action! You might also search for image-evocative words like: lucid, luminious, clearwater and play with combinations that end with 'studio' or 'images' or whatever.

Susan, could I just hire you? I have not yet started a gallery and I NEED to. You got me thinking about that. But do you agree that Lisa Carpenter Photography is just kind of UGH...or does it matter in photography...let the work speak for itself?

I think it doesn't really matter if the name doesn't say it all, you can always have something else on your logo or signboard to indicate what it is that you really do. But people do definitely associate lens with photography so you're safe there!

How about LensLights? And perhaps you don't need the Lisa. The two words together and yet both starting with a capital letter is a bit fashionable. The word "lights" brightens it up and the fact that both start with 'L' make it a little catchy.

Or, LensWorks alone---actually, it is nice.

If you used Lisa Carpentry, which, by the way, has a very nice sound, you could just leave it at that---not add "Photography". A name, especially a name like yours, by itself tends to lend an air of professionalism and elitism (nothing wrong with elitism if it's to promote a business!). If it's alone, it hints that you're so well known that you don't need to add any qualifiers to the name---kind of like you were a chain business.

Yes, you can hire me! Payment? You can look at my gallery and critique, critique, critique! I've never had the opportunity to show my work to a professional, and there is so much I have no clue about.

  Hi Lisa,
I assume that lisacarpenter.com is your domain? If so why use anything else other than Lisa Carpenter! Sounds good to me.

Del
