Now that I have a hyperfocal chart, how do I use it?

First of all you select the focal length of lens you want. For this example I will select 50mm. Then you can select an f-stop. Say f16. Follow those two columns and you find a distance of 20.5 feet. If you focus your 50mm lens at that distance then everything between 10.25 feet (1/2 the focus distance) and infinity will be within your DOF.

Now suppose you are shooting with a 28mm lens and you have an object 10 feet in front of you that you want in focus as well as having all of the background in focus. Since the optimum focus point is double the nearest point of focus you have to look for a focus point on the chart twice the nearest object (10 feet). So looking at the chart under 28mm for a focus point in the neighborhood of 20feet the closest without going over is 18.4 feet. Now look at the f-stop that corresponds with that number and you have an aperture of f5.6. So now you know that in order to get the object and the background in focus with your 28mm lens you need an f-stop of 5.6 and a focus point of 18.4 feet.
