Studio Lighting I am about to embark on a part time photography career. I have been hired to take dance school portraits. I have only done location wedding with camera mounted flash. I now need to upgrade to studio lights. So many options, so many terms, so many products. What is the difference between a "mono light" and packed heads? In short What is a good reliable product, with enough output, and durability to survive setting up, shooting upwards of 500 shots in an 8 hour day? Background material and color... Muslin or paper? What is more difficult to light dark or light background. The shot will be done at the dance studio so room is plentiful. Any definitive book you might suggest? Thanks kindly Phil

I have been following the most informative thread. Under questions-it's called "Studio Lighting or The Cooked Husband" I think if you will introduce yourself there, they will be able to help you. I am waiting for the answer to YOUR question because I have exactly the same situation.

Thank you for your help. I've been reading your advice and looking at the photos with envy. I have a JTL versa light 160 set with two heads, a white unbrella and a black. My husband also got a soft box for me. I think I need a third light for the background. I just don't know what to do with them quite yet. I love photography and would just like to photograph the grandbabies (beautifully) and every now and then some of the dancers at my daughter's dance studio. So, my question really is the same as Phil's. Recommendations appreciated.

Lynn, Since you already have lights- why not set them up as I discribed on the thread-part1.with the clock. a third light is a real asset and I recommend it whole hartedly. set the camera at 200/f22 and post a test picture on thread 2-we can go from there.(if you start with these settings for my eye-it just gives me a starting place) As far as books for those starting out, I have written 4 on cd -written in simple text , even beginner can follow.I will have to get back to you with a list of other that are not overly technical.Also try ebay ,YOu get such good deals there - that even if the book turns out to be real advanced-you won't feel bad if it sits on the shelf until you can enjoy it. Also there are instructors here that have wonderful books. As far as paper it is a good disposable backdrop-great with pets. for something like dance , I would really recommend using muslin- Paper tends to tear with to much movements made on it- where when taped down- muslin would be safer and not as distructable.
