What is a megapixil

I am interested in digital cameras. However, I do not understand megapixils. What is a "megapixil"?

  Megapixel = Big Pixel

OK, pixels in a digital camera are the approximate equivalent to the clumps of dye in film. A megapixel is 1,000,000 pixels.

  Megapixels are what digital camera manufacturers keep increasing,... about every other year or so, to attempt to get close to the quality and integrity of fine-grain films and to keep the public buying.
(...Sorry, couldn't help myself.) :)

  "You can't handle the truth!" (Would site the quote but can't for the life of me remember the name of the movie. Getting old. LOL)

  Torrence,
Sorry for trying to mis-direct your post. It was a good question which deserves a good answer.

I found this description at dictionary.com:

Main Entry: megapixel
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: a unit of graphic resolution, 1,048,576 or 220 pixels, the speed at which a graphics card can display data.

Hope this helps.

Kerry,
That movie was "A Few Good Men". Nicholson made that quote. (Great flick!)
Bob

  In the metric system -
deca = 10
centa = 100
kilo = 1,000 (one thousand)
mega = 1,000,000 (one million)
giga = 1,000,000,000 (one billion)
tera = 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion)

Thus a "megapixel" = one million pixels. A "pixel," which is derived from "picture element," is the smallest form in an image, much like a single grain on a sheet of film.

Also - just for your information -
A "mega byte" would be one million bytes. (A "byte" is the smallest form of computer data).
Hope this helps.
