Photography Question

Camera, Budget and School

I need advice on purchasing a Digital Camera. I am returning to school for Web and Graphic Design. I am purchasing my computer equipment from Mac and wish to buy a digital camera. I love the Minolta SLR ($1300) but would like a smaller one (in size and price) that can suffice until I can afford the the digital SLR. With all that said . . . what say you? Any reccomendations on what to get for now?
Thank you!

Minolta has recently introduced the 5D for considerably less - ~$900 with 18-70 zoom lens. If you're not tied to Maxxum, there's also the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT or Olympus Evolt 300.

D'oh! I completely spaced Nikon's new "budget" DSLR, the D50, and Pentax's *istDS and *istDL.

Thanks so much for your input. I have been researching your suggestions and find that the I like what I see with the Pentax istDL. I quess I'll have to sell my minolta lens . . . :(

Rachel, you didn't say you already had a Minolta lens. If it's a good autofocus lens that will fit on the Maxxum 5D, then that might be your best bet. If you don't need the kit lens, you can usually save by just getting the camera body.

I'm sure that's partly what Jon meant by "if you're not tied to Maxxum". Many people stick with the same brand when moving from film to digital because they can keep using lenses that they have.

You are correct I did leave out that pertinant information . . . thanks for your input.

It would be a squeeze on the pocket book because to "start over" with a new brand because I just purchased a zoom lens not even a month ago. I have done my research on the Minolta and was put off by the $$. One thing I did find out is that the lens for the Minolta is considerably less than that of the Canon rebel. Mostly due to the anti-shanke system present in the body of the Minolta compared Canon's anti-shake in the lens. Which in turn makes it more the lens more costly. Conclusion . . . you put out $$ either way I look at it. :)
