Photography Question

Tonya R. Boles

I recieved an award today/

After all the bad stuff I have heard about picture.com, and the bad luck I've had from them myself, today was a big shock.

My photo "Up Close", placed second in their Open Amateur Photography Contest, I recieved a commemorative bronze coin as well.

The photo is in my gallery if anyone wants to see it. I just wanted to share my good news with everyone...

Tonya, I'm sure you're excited. It can be fun to win anything.

I'm sorry though I'm going to have to be a wet blanket and side with Gregory here. I would hate there to be ANY thread on this site that gives any person hope that Picture.com is a legit organization. It is not. They are ripping off photographers by using their dreams against them. And while I'm at it poetry.com is doing the same thing to writers. Please, please nobody fall for their scam.

Poetry.com, the Photo.com writing equivalent was investigated by John Stossel. He had a group of 1st graders send in their poems and they all "won".

Please, please, please anybody reading this thread--know it's a hoax.

Again, I'm really sorry Tonya. It may seem unfair to do in your happy thread. But unfortunately your thread may make somebody think it's a real contest and it's not.

Karma

I do know about them, and all that others have been through with them. The prize might not be worth much to others, but it put a smile on my face and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't want to put false hope into anyone, I was just happy to get this. After my bad luck with them in the past.

Thanks Kerby. As some have said, they may not be the kind you want to deal with, I was just stating what happened to me...Didn't want to get anything started.

I'm afraid I'm with Gregory and Karma...I received the same exact 2nd place prize and a list of the other 2nd prize winners, funny thing was, my name wasn't on the list. Hmmmmm... I trashed my "trophy" and every bothersome letter I get from them. I was new and so excited when they hoaxed me that I was a finalist, and I was quite upset to find it all a scheme. But, I'm glad you found a way to have it be a good thing, just don't let others get their hopes up from it.

Hey, Tonya! I was reading over your thread and had to leave a comment (or two). I have never dealt with picture.com but I have dealt with poetry.com. I know what scam artists these guys can be...
BUT if you get a prize that you don't pay for with these guys, I don't think anybody should "rain on your parade." Obviously not EVERYBODY receives this honor (judging from the earlier post of Harry G.). Somehow YOUR photo was CHOSEN to receive recognition!! You should be proud of that!
If someone doesn't like picture.com or others like them, don't enter the contest. If you don't agree with paying for "prizes" then don't. But if someone receives recognition (WITHOUT PAYING!!!!) then don't insult their winning moment.
I've heard the same "scam" type comments (The same people and the same expensive cameras win every month) made about BP... Does that make BP a scam?
Anyone who has dealt with these people know that they don't usually give away anything free of charge...so to get any free prize from them should be a great honor!! :)
Congratulations, Tonya!

Maybe the economy has them running part time instead of full time game.
It's not insulting anyone's parade, it's calling it what it is. Caps don't change that. But if you know the routine and it's still woo-hoo anyway, can't really criticize them for anything else they do then.

Congrats To You Tonya For Your Acheivement! Its A Great Looking Image!
Sherry The Statement You Made About BP Winners Simply Isnt True,Alot Of Inexpensive Cameras Do Win The Contest I Have Seen Wins With A Disposable Camera! When You Get Right Down To It And Actually Look At The Image For Its Merit Instead Of (Oh It Won Because Of The Camera Or The Photographer)You Will See Why It Won,And Hopefully You Can Benefit From The Conclusion. Have A Great Sunday:-)

Thanks Sherry and Terry for your congrats. I will take my winnings and leave it at that. Whatever picture.com is or isn't, who cares. I don't think we should get into that debate all over again, plenty of other threads for that. I was simply stating that I was happy about this prize because of past issues with them. I'm not promoting them to anyone, be your on JUDGE!!! And have fun.
As for BP, I like the site and will continue to enter photo's. As far as how images are judged here, I have no clue... I don't think Sherry meant anything about the camera, she simply stated there have been questions brought up about them...:) Right Sherry?

Again Tonya, I'm sorry if it seemed like I was raining on your parade. I was simply trying to warn others who might come up with this thread through a search engine. It does happen. BP is excellent at getting their discussions at the top of search engine lists!

For the record I think you are a good enough photographer to win with more legitimate companies, so I'm not concerned that this will be your last award.

And also for the record I first won here with a $300 camera and my rate of wins has not changed with a better camera (darn!) LOL And I've never taken a class.

Yes, Tonya, you did read that correctly! My comment clearly states that I have "heard" those comments. The day I am convinced that only expensive cameras and who you are is the only way to win...is the day for me to leave...because there would be no sense in me being here...
I was just saying that prizes are all subjective...If it makes someone happy AND you don't pay like the people with picture.com horror stories, then it has accomplished its purpose!
It's a shame that some people are so quick to criticize...when I was just trying to uplift a fellow photographer...(I wasn't trying to insult anyone!)
I'm SO sorry that your happy thread has turned into this :( BPers are usually known for their positive and not their negative.

[If anyone at BP doesn't know what picture.com is about then they haven't been around long, since this type thread appears at least weekly. I think the "warning squad" is doing their job well. And you (Tonya) even stated in your original entry that you've had bad luck with them.]

I am glad you received your award but let's face facts. You don't need an award from these people to confirm your abilities. Your work speaks for itself.

Unfortunately their awards, aren't worth the paper they are printed on. It is no different than me going though everyones galleries and handing out awards, it really means nothing. Tonya, unfortunately, the fact is that this award has no substance behind it. Like a $50 bill was in the depression - wasn't worth the paper. Although I think your photos is excellent and wonderful. It makes me wonder if picture.com actually look at the photos when they give out awards, or whether it is more like a "lottery", as I have heard some really bad photos get these awards also and you don't really want your photo compared/judged with the same credibility and photography talent as some of these shockers.

Enter your pic into a proper reputable competition (even if it a local one in your area) if you win, or become a finalist.... then you have something to BEAM about!

Disagree with you on one thing, Natalie. During the Depression (in the US), a $50.00 bill was a lot of money and would buy a lot of stuff. It was just that nobody had one. Now in Germany, with rampant inflation, your money was practically worthless.
