Photography Question

Ruben L. Wade

Hiring a photographer as an independent contracter

What can I expect to pay daily for a photographer in a high volume family portrait studio type setting? I Would provide the equipment and get the customers. What would be the best way to find one?

This sounds like a Debby Tabb question for sure.

Deb, are you up yet? Have some coffee and a chat with Ruben. ;-)

Hey Chris! Good morning. You're an early riser. I have an appointment with Debby on Sunday. If She doesn't answer now, She'll probably tell me then. I am privilaged enough to have the honor of private instruction by Debby using my kids as subjects. I am really excited to have personal this kind of instruction and would like to know if any other Photographer would be willing to share their knowledge with me in like manner as well... ?

Chris , you nut- thank you very much for the vote of confidance!!
sorry to be tardy gentelmen, I had a meeting this morning.
Ruban this is really one of those "who knows" kind of questions.
*what you can get them for.
*are they well versed or are you teaching them every thing?
ok , in studio: places like Olan Mills and Sears ect. start (know nothing) hires for $8.00 - $12.00
and for positions taught them for you do it all! studios.(sorry sucks)
for a privetely owned studio- you don't want to hire, teach, hire , teach
I'm telling you from doing it for OM it's a pain!!!
and in your location it's murder!
Some like CPI did private contractor and payed $100.00 a day straight. No matter what ya did. Thats fair - but then you had to belive that your hire was going out and working it.
If possible try not to hire until you absolutly have to!!- it is a can of worms-
everyone thinks it would be so fun to run thier own business, until you are there.
It's a lot of work ,
and employees or none doesn't make you any less the business person.
OK events- I pay depending on the event and how many photographers.
$100.00, $200.00 up to $500.00

The best way to start this (and again ,please this has worked for us and is my opinion)
is to network with other photographers- how do you do that?
well, for starters you have to be NICE!!
not think so much of your self that you can not learn or need anyone else.
Then as you meet other photographers you ask if they would like to net work with you - when you get a job you may call them as a extra camera and pay(?)
and if they have a job they can call you. you gather a few, in case one is working and can't help you, or feels the job is too small to fill thier day.
(that doesn't seem to happen much)
this give you the oppertunity of charging more- and getting twice the shots and angles.( this is impresive to any client and boosts business)
you keep sole contact and do the editing .
when you are a hire for a job - then you shot and walk.
I hope this helps,
Debby

Thanks Debby! I'm glad you made it. I plan on having to hire independent Photographers in the future and would like to see who might be interested. I would be looking for experienced studio photographers and they would choose the days they could be at the shoot location and be treated as an independent contractor. I really would like to get to know more photographers and I realize I have alot to learn.
