Editing Flaws in PS (for Debby)

Deb, was reading the posts on soft focusing & you said you try not to use PS much. When filming for weddings or portraits, do you edit out skin flaws or do any type of editing before giving the pix to the people? I'm wondering if I should do anything like that to the pix I take of my daughter's wedding. I want the few pix I do take, to look exceptionally nice - even though I'm a pure amature.

Also, do the professional photographers use Auto program modes when filming for weddings or do they do all the pix thru manual settings? They seem to be so fast at what they do, I never see them fiddling much with the cameras. They make it look so effortless!! (I guess that's what they're paid to do.)

Kathy, I don't edit my proofs. I will edit out (have my lab do it) flaws in enlargements if the customer requests it (and pays for it).
It all depends on what you consider auto modes. I never use Program mode as it give me no control. I use AP mode most of the time.

there again, what is the difference in program mode and AP mode? My camera says it has a program mode, which is auto everything. I simply point and shoot. I plan on doing this for the wedding as 1) I haven't learned to use manual settings yet and 2) while in the wedding I will have the camera set on a tripod so my son can point & shoot as I instruct him. I know my shots won't be as nice as the pro's, but as long as they look pretty good, that's all I'm looking for. I'll worry about learning manual stuff AFTER the wedding!!!

Your "plan" for shooting at your daughter's wedding is smart thinking. A wedding is NOT the place you want to be experimenting! Especially when it's your daughter at the alter.
If you are unfamiliar with your camera's settings, then, by all means, set it to Program, and fire away. Practice with the other settings when you're not under so much pressure.

You did ask the difference between Program and Aperture Priority modes. I can explain that here for you, in simple terms -

You need to know this first - There are two factors that determine the exposure on film or digital files - the shutter speed and the aperture or f-stop setting. Remember that.
Now:
Program - The camera automatically sets BOTH shutter speed and aperture for you. You just point and shoot!
Aperture Priority - YOU set the aperture or f-stop, and the camera will select the appropriate shutter speed.
Shutter Priority - YOU set the shutter speed, and the camera will select the appropriate aperture or f-stop.
Manual - YOU select BOTH the aperture and shutter speed.

ALL of the above is based on the camera's metering determination.

This is as concise as it gets. After your daughter's wedding, if you have questions, please post, or even contact me. I and others (I'm sure) will be happy to assist.

Program mode is just what you said - auto everything. AP (aperature priority) mode is where you select the aperature and the camera selects the shutter speed. With flash, this would be the flash sync speed. With AP, you get to control the DOF whereas with Program Mode you get to control nothing.

I frequent a professional wedding photographer forum and most of the pros do edit out flaws and correct for underexposure if needed, and they also love applying special effects, etc...

Lots of photographers use PS to improve/enhance photos, including soft focus, removing blemishes, etc... See these sites of photographers that use PS to their GREAT advantage:

HEY YOU-I DIDN'T WANT ANYONE TO FEEL I HADN'T ANSWERED YOU-

HI KATHY,
THANK YOU FOR WRITING ME AND YOUR WONDERFUL COMMENTS.
THE ANSWER TO YOU QUESTION CONCERNING EDITING FLAWS -I DO NOT.
I HAVE PEOPLE ASK ME "CAN YOU REMOVE MY HEAVY ARMS, WRINKLES,ETC."" NO I DON'T- THIS IS WHO YOU ARE AND THE PORTRAIT WILL SEEM FORIEN TO THOSE WHO KNOW AND LOVE YOU "
NOW, IF A KID HAS A PIMPLE THAT JUST CAME UP ETC. THEN I WILL (HIGH SCHOOL GRAD, WEDDING)- BUT I HAVE NOTICABLE SCARES ON MY FACE FROM A DOG BITE , THEY SEEM TO LIE IN AREAS THAT ARE NOW LINES IN MY FACE(SEE THERE ARE GOOD THINGS ABOUT GETTING OLDER,LOL) BUT I NEVER ASK THAT THESE BE TOUCHED UP.IT IS WHO I AM NOW.
BUT , IF YOU WANT TO TOUCH SOMETHING UP USING THE CLONE TOOL, MAKE SURE YOU MAGNIFY IT ALOT BEFORE USEING THE TOOL-THIS MAKES THINGS EASIER.
YES , WHEN YOU SHOOT THIS WEDDING YOU MAY WANTT TO SET THE CAMERA ON SHUTTER PRIORITY, AND THIS SHOULD WORK FINE FOR YOU.( NOW I AM GEUSSING-I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT YOUR WORKING WITH - OUR COMPANY HAS D70'S AND S2'S)
I TEACH ANY WHERE SOMEONE PUTS TOGETHER A CLASS.I BELIVE POSING MAKES SUCH A DIFFERANCE TO AN ARTIST WORK- I HAVE EVEN TAUGHT AT SCRAP BOOKING STORES- ANYWHERE THERE ARE 5-UP PEOPLE WHO HAVE A INTREST.
OF COURSE TO GO OUT OF STATE- I NEED A HIGHER NUMBER OF PEOPLE.
I WOULD LOVE TO PENN. IN THE FALL THOUGH-I HERE THE LEAVES ARE SPECTACULAR!!!
I DO HOPE THIS HELPS, IF I CAN HELP YOU MORE-JUST LET ME KNOW, AND ADD WHAT YOUR USING.
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU IN ALL YOUR VENTURES,
KAT- I KNOW YOU WROTE ME AGAIN BEFORE I LEFT THE HOUSE FOR MY MEETING-WILL EMAIL YOU LATER.

Thanks you guys!!! And karma, Steve Tinetti's website is really nice. His pictures, I think, are a bit unique & that is something I would like to have for my daughter's wedding. But unless I become an expert in 2 weeks...lol... I'll settle for some simple pix. But thanks again for all the advice!!!
