HELP!! HOW TO REMOVE OR CHANGE A BACKROUND

YOU GUYS HELPED ME SO MUCH THE LAST TIME- HERE WE GO AGAIN!
I CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO TAKE A SUBJECT AND REMOVE THE BACK GROUND.
OR CHANGE THE BACKGROUND.
SUCH AS IN ALL THOSE WONDERFUL FLOWER SHOTS THAT END UP ON BLACK BACK GROUNDS OR KIDS IN FAIRY TREES ETC.
CAN SOME OF YOU HELP?
I HAVE PS 7.0.
THANK YOU

  Hi Debby,

I use PS7 too so this should be easy.

First step is to make a duplicate copy by going to Image>Duplicate. Close your original. At the top of your screen go to Window>Layers and click to make a check mark next to Layers. This will open up a window that will allow you to see what layer you are working on. Go to Layers at the top of your screen and click duplicate Layer. Go to your magnetic lasso tool (second from the top on the left side)Left click on it and hold until the side window pops up and make sure you choose the magnetic lasso. Across the top of your screen you will see an option "Feather" I usually keep mine set between 3 and 5.

Left click on your subject and start going around your image, continue until you get back to where you started. Once there is a continuous lassoed selection your selected area will have a lasso that looks like marching ants.

Go to the top of your screen and click Select>Inverse. This selects your background. Click Delete and it will remove your background.

Drag the background you want onto your image. You could also copy and paste it instead of dragging. If your new background now covers your subject, go to the layers window and click on your subject and drag it straight up to place that layer above the background. This can also be done by going to the top of the screen and going to Layer>Arrange>Bring to front. You'll find that there is usually more than one way to do a lot of the steps involved with PS, you just have to find what works best for you.

If you should decide you just want a plain black layer, go to your tools and make sure that your color swatch appears as a black one on top and white on the bottom. Go to Layer>New this will create a blank layer. Next click Alt & Backspace at the same time. This will make a black layer. Arrange your layers if necessary.

Once you are satisfied you can flatten your image to combine all your layers by going to Layer>Flatten Image. If you are printing on your own printer, you don't have to flatten it. Unflattened leaves the option open to change the background again if you choose. However for those who read this and are burning an image to cd to have printed at a lab, most labs need to have a flattened image to work with.

Hope this helps. Debby you know you can always email me if you get stuck. I tried to be thorough with the instructions and actually do one as I typed so that I didn't leave out any steps.

Let me know how it goes.

Liza

Just another thought here. For anyone looking to do really fun stuff with their photos, look for books by Scott Kelby. I have two and have had a ball with them.

Allow me to add another option. Liza's recommendations certainly work, but the Lasso tool is very sloppy, and the edges will be anything but accurate.
AFTER you use the Lasso tool, and before you separate the subject from the background, go to the bottom of your tool bar, and select "Quick Mask mode." When you select this, you'll see your subject (within the perimeters of your lasso) turn transparent red. The red area represents what you have "chosen." Enlarge your image significantly, and choose an appropriate size paint brush, with appropriate feathering (I say "appropriate" because only you will know how big the brush and how soft the feathering should be once you try it on your particular image).
You will then need to circumnavigate your entire selection, and clean and fine tune your edges.
Note - you will need to set your color picker's two color blocks to black (RGB 0-0-0) and white (RGB 255-255-255). White will paint "IN" the red color, black will "ERASE" the red color.

FYI - if you intend to do this often, there are quite a few plug-in softwares available that will dance circles around the Lasso tool. In fact, you would be better off simply using PS's Quick Mask from the get-go, or even the Magic Wand, rather than fooling with the Lasso.
AND...using the mouse in this situation was once described as trying to "paint with a brick." Wacom makes a "pen and tablet" (Intuos 3) which is far more accurate, not to mention easier to use than the standard mouse.
I do subject separations almost daily, photographing jewelry, then separating it from the background, and setting it on a new custom gradient background.
If you'd like to see some of my "separations," go to my website (www.mhcphoto.net), click on Jury Services, then Image Gallery. ALL the jewelry shots are separations - I make the gradient backgrounds in PS. In my Fine Art section, "Crazy Daisies" is a bunch of daisies separated from their original background.

I have PSE 3.0. . can anyone give me some step by step instructions using it. . . I have done some of this background changing with success but don't feel like it's the absolute best it could be and sometimes has a "pasted on" look to it especially around the feet and the hair?? I don't understand masking and have had someone try to explain it to me but they don't use elements so some of the functions aren't the same!

If they start deleting threads for bad typing (which may result in improper words), I'm sunk! I do remember one time I hit the wrong key when I was trying to type shutter. Oops!

I don't think anyone even noticed it or, if they did, they didn't comment. I felt like an idiot (maybe for a good reason???)

Michael is correct the lasso tool is rather sloppy. I usually go back in after with the eraser tool to touch up. Michael, can you recommend a good plug-in? Making the workload more efficient and precise would be wonderful. I checked out your website and you do beautiful work. I wish I had such picturesque views to capture. After seeing those, my immediate area looks extremely boring.

  Hi Everyone,

I also would like to know how it can to done in PSE 3. I would love some tips.
Michael I just bought the Wacom tablet with mouse and pen but haven't used it yet. Is it a pretty slick tool? I took a class and the teacher was using one, so I bought one. Thanks you you help.

I tried that tutorial Derek, it was really pretty cool. I think it will take some practice (as most things do) but it will be useful. Thanks for the link.

Our very own BP instruction Jim Zuckerman says that only Corel Knockout can cut properly around hair etc.
Anyone else tried and and liked it?
Thank you all for these great tips!

I ran across this cutout tool recently. I haven't downloaded the trial, but it looks awesome. Kinda expensive though.

  Hi Susan,
Keep trying, I just tried and it works for me. Try searching adobe extract tool in Google and it is the first non-sponsered link. Hope this helps.
