Premium Gallery - how to use for business purposes

I don't know if I'm posting this question in the right place. I am interested in uploading pictures into a premium gallery (which I haven't signed up for yet) to use to sell photos for a small side business. How do you prevent someone from just downloading the picture they want without purchasing it? How many photos can be uploaded? I am interested in uploading sports photos...which could mean a lot of pictures would be on the website at one time. Do you use a "watermark"? I'm totally clueless. Any help anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.

Linda, here's the beauty of BetterPhoto. Click my gallery, sure you can look around if you want!! wink wink anyways, right-click on one of my pics and try to download it. Here's the beauty, it won't let you! It says a message about copyright so you're images are safe here in BP. Give us a try, its a great site.

Good luck

  Linda,
If a person is determined enough, they can download pictures from your gallery. BUT, if you follow the guidelines for sizing it to 500 or so pixels, and 72 dpi, they won't even be able to print a 4x6 that looks clear. The images are only useful for viewing on screen.

The premium gallery can hold 300 photos, I think. There isn't really any way to set it up with links for purchasing images online. But you can do that with a BetterPhoto website, which is more expensive. The ones I've seen look great, though.

In all honesty, the dis-abled right-click will only deter the casual thief.
Anyone who's computer-savvy can copy and paste anything from anywhere.

Therein lies the trade-off,...
Do we live in fear,..that there are those unscrupulous types out there lurking in the shadows looking to steal our precious photos and claim them as their own?
Or do we just post our prize-winning images for the world to see, and take our chances that our rights of possession will ultimately prevail?

Personally, I look at it this way:

I hate to have watermarks and copyright symbols appearing on my photos. I think they detract from the "feel" of the image. For that reason, I will place my name and copyright symbol on the BACK of any prints that I sell. I want my clients to get true corner-to-corner photographs.

As far as web use,...if someone wants to copy one of my photos for personal use as a print for their den or for an image for their desktop background, unfortunately there is little I can do to stop them. I can only hope that their sense of decency will prevail and that they will contact me link to let me know of their intended use.

If their intentions are are for profit,...I can only hope that the (my) photos show up somewhere in another venue,...maybe in an ad or on a billboard somewhere. (I could sure use the money.) ;)

Thanks! You guys are the best. I'll tell you what I'm trying to do....I want to take action shots of little league sports (baseball, football, soccer, etc.). Then I just want to simply download them to a website..and try to sell them from there. Of course, this isn't big bucks we're talking...just $5 here...$10 there...or perhaps more...not sure (hopefully). The day I shoot the photos, I will just hand out some cards with my name and website on it to parents who are there watching the games. So, they probably aren't professional photo theives that will view my website. Since I won't be making a great deal of money at first, I'm looking for the most inexpensive method of putting my photos on-line. I like the idea of perhaps making the images smaller....and wouldn't mind putting a watermark on them (wondering if I can do this with Photosuite 7 which I'm currently using to edit my photos...or if there is another way I can put watermarks on them). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Y'all are great! Linda

Oh, forgot to mention...I do not want to accept credit card payments through my website...just want to have an address where they can mail me a check and then I'll send them a print. Short...sweet...simple....nothing too involved.

dotphoto.com used to have a feature where you could set your price and allow people to order. I think they collected the money though and then debited your checking account or something . . . I think they charged a commission percentage but I'm not sure if they charged to use the service!
