For the life of me, I cannot remember what the stuff is called, but I use it in my own studio to stand up jewelry rings.
It is a sticky, gummy substance that can be purchased at art supply stores. It comes in "sticks" similar to a pack of chewing gum. You pull off a small piece, set it on your background, and then set the ring on top of it. It should hold in place. If you are shooting film, you will need to be very careful so as to hide the gum in the shot. If you are doing digital work on the computer, you can erase any gum that is visible in a post editing program like Photoshop.
You can check out some of my jewelry images on my website below, listed under the 'Jury Services' section. I used this gum on all the rings and ear rings.

Michael, I know at least one brand of the stuff you're talking about is called "Fun Tack". My wife is a teacher and she will laminate signs and posterboards and stuff and then use Fun Tack to hang it up in the classroom. That way she doesn't get multiple thumbtack or staple holes over the years.

J Kid - was that inscription engraved, or written in Sharpie?

If you are refering to it looking out of focus, I concur. But, as Ive stated before ,my pictures are sharp but when I put them up in the gallery they look a little fuzzy. Maybe I should size them down

I think that must be it, becuase my first picture is sized down and it does appear to be sharper

I wasn't referring to focus, I was referring to the "love you always" inscription on the bottom ring that is so obviously done in PhotoShop.

no PS, it says "Love you always & forever" but I couldn't see it all because it wouldn't fit. I did blow it out in PS so that the focus would go to the words. The picture is so sharp on my screen that you can see all the pits. I'll have to PS those out or the Jeweler might get a call
