  Hi Rite –

First – please don’t get discouraged! Learning how to make good images is a process and trying to rush that process will only result in disappointment and more discouragement. Trust me with this – I’ve been there and wasted way too much time trying to get someplace I was not ready to go.

I looked through your gallery and you have some nice ideas and a good eye for color and composition. There are some rather obvious problems, but they are fixable and you can learn some rather simple things that will help.

!. Use a tripod – perhaps the one piece of equipment that will almost immediately improve your images. Many of your current images are either blurred completely or soft (meaning the focal point is a little unclear). Not only will a good tripod help to make your images sharper, the process of setting up a tripod makes you stop and think about your image prior to tripping the shutter.

2. When making images of flowers I have found that it is difficult, if not impossible, to get accurate color and clean images when shooting in the middle of the day or in strong light. Try making these type images either in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening when the sun is lower on the horizon and the light is less harsh.

3 Try not to center your subject in the middle of the image. Practice using the rule of thirds and also think of “more as less” meaning that if you want the subject to really pop out at the viewer move in close to the main subject and eliminate anything that does not compliment or enhance this subject.

I have found that my own photography has really improved since I started taking classes here at BP. One of the first classes you might want to consider is Bryan Peterson’s class on exposure. This class really helped me to better understand and practice the rules of proper exposure. If you are unable to take classes at this time you might also consider trying to get Bryan’s book on exposure at your library. Finally, practice, practice, practice! And, post some of your images here for critique. Everyone here, from the most raw beginner to the most experienced pro started out where you are now – at the beginning. Most people here are really helpful and will offer you honest and insightful critiques and advice for improving your images.

Hope this helps!

Irene

hi Rita, I took a look at your gallery, you have some really good shots, like Irene said, dont get discouraged just keep taking more, and more pictures!!! The more you get out there and shoot the better you will get, alot of the things you learn in photography is through your own trial and error, dont be afraid to try new things and experiment, thats how we learn!!! A few things I did notice that you could work on were:

1- make sure when people look at your photo, they know what your main subject piont was, so that usually means cropping your pictures more or zooming in closer when you take the picture, such as with your "baby swallows" pic. if you crop that more it will put more emphasis on the birds so when you look at it, they will be the first thing you see, I think that will help alot.

2- work on taking your pictures like Irene said, either early in the morning or later in the evening.

3- with soem of your B&W shots you might try instead of coloring in there clothing color in there eyes or lips, that might help with puting more emphasis on them as well, but thats just a matter of oppinion!!

4- I think your sunsets are great, keep them coming!!!!

Like I said these are just suggestions, find your style and how you like to shoot and keep at it!!!!

Don't get discouraged but don't ever become completely satisfied. Keep shooting, studying and practicing and you will keep improving.

Monopods are nice for when a tripod can't be used but they do not take the place of a tripod. You can't use as slow a shutter speed with a monopod as you can with a tripod and you can't set a camera on a monopod and walk off and leave it to rearange something like you can with a tripod. On the other hand, a monopod can be used in a tight area where a tripod is not practical. It depends on the type of shooting you plan to do.

  Hi Rita -

On the issue of a tripod vs. monopod: I have used both, but greatly prefer a tripod. But, that is me and I am something of a Klutz so I need the stablity a tripod offers. IMHO, a good, solidly made tripod is second in importance only to good lenses if your goal is to produce really sharp, WOW images. It is worth saving your money to buy a good tripod - the cheap ones, at least in my experience, are more headache than help.
