Photography Question

Jennifer Badamo

Selling Photos on eBay.

Hi everyone. I recently became a single mother and am looking for ways to support my family while finishing my college degree. I am considering selling photos on eBay. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can anyone offer advice? Thanks!

Jennifer

Jennifer - there are a gazillion photographers "trying" to sell on Ebay. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but you need to take a reality pill here. If you have a family to support, you need to find a steady paying job first, then look to Ebay and/or other photo-selling venues once your kids are fed, and the mortgage/rent is paid.

By the way - the most successful venue I've found for selling "fine art" photography is juried Arts and Crafts shows. I work full-time, and manage to exhibit & sell at about 12 juried shows per year, averaging about $1500 in sales per show right now. I plan to retire soon, and will then apply to much bigger and better shows around the country.
Good luck.

Michael-- I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself fully. I am not looking for eBay to support me as a full-time thing. I'm considering it as extra money in my pocket. But thanks for the advice on the arts & crafts shows. I'll look into it.

Hi Jennifer. Michael is right evrybody who owns a digital camera is trying to sell a photographic image on eBay. Unless you have a unique highly saught after image I would look at other venues. Example: in 2004 I photographed the Belmont Horse race. The whole world was expecting Smarty Jones to win and be the next Triple Crown Winner. But Birdstone Beat him out and spoiled it for him. When I got home from New York I photoshoped some of my better winning pictures of Birdstone and put them on eBay as limited edition prints. I sold a few, Even a few of the losing horse Smarty Jones, not even close to making enough to pay for my trip there to photograph it. But if Smarty Jones would have won....That would have been another story. Those photos would have sold for years.

Good Luck!

To Joe, I'm not Michael, but I'll attempt to answer your question, "What is a juried show?"

A juried show is one in which you submit photos to a panel of jurors, likely made up of professional photographers, graphics educators, or fine artists. The jury determines if your art meets the quality criteria for the particular showing. If not, you wouldn't be invited to show.

  Einar,

Are you a member of Big Stock Photo's.

How much does it cost to join to sell your images?

Have you been successful at it?

I make these photo balls and I was thinking of trying to sell them on one of these sites.

But I am a little unsure of it. I am not sure anybody would even want them.

Let me know if you had any success with this. How much do you make when someone purchases your image?

Do you sell alot of the images?

Any inforamtion would be helpful.

Kerby

Michelle, I look over the internet on state websites. Like Illinois festival and craft fairs and you can sign up to receive their state wide pamphlets. I will list all the fairs and what is required for each community. As fees, number of pictures to be submitted for judgiing, and booth costs. The staes usually provides these. Good Luck!!!
