Contest *can you?* Hi I entered a shot in this month's People category (Skywalker) and someone--Nobi actually- suggested I might want to re-enter it next month in the monthly theme. Can you do this? Second question--how does the appropriateness of category choice make a difference in ANY photo contest? Obviously if the category is pets and you use a photo of a dump truck, you might have stretched it a bit. Assuming though that the photo could have worked in both, is the image more important than the choice of category? Any thoughts?

More times than not, an image can "fit" into more than one category. Your image "Skywalker" is one. Personally, I don't think I would have put it in the "People" category either, since, even though there are "people" inserted, it is the overall impact that prevails in this fine image, and not so much the people being "people." It is a very strong and exciting image, and very imaginative on your part. I think I would have chosen "digital darkroom" or maybe "special effects." The nice thing about BP is that you can enter it every month in a different category. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net

Thanks Michael for that. It doesn't fit into the digital stuff or digital manipunation because it wasn't either. Nobi had suggested perhaps next month's theme which is 'symplicity'. I'd like to take credit for the imagination bit, but it was literally being in the right place at the right time. Bolivia is generally high and dry. A couple of days before it had rained more than they'd seen in 30 odd years and this normally dry salt bed had about 2 inches of water on it without a breath of wind. You don't get luckier than that! It's straight reflection of 2 girls and some cumulous clouds. Had a look at your site. Wow! The images of the guitar and the drumsticks blew me away. Really talented photographer you are.

Wow, your image is even more intriguing knowing that it's "real!" My apologies, as I thought it was a Photoshop manipulation. It truly is an awesome shot! Keep entering it each month in different categories if necessary - it's bound to find a "home" soon, as well as the appreciation of the judges. Michael

Michael you're a sweetheart! I learned a thing or two from looking at the National Geographic guys and the Life guys. Shoot tons and MAYBE one or two images will work out. A few thousand more rolls and I might end up with a gallery as good as yours. Got to work in changing the ratio (grin) A friend said something to me once when I was using a Nikon 401 and an AF lens.

You know you've "arrived" when somebody takes your straight shot and thinks it's PS! I love that picture. I am always looking for reflection shots and never finding them in this windy area. LOL Definately go for the monthly theme next month! Karma

Hey Kit, thou shall not recite my name in vain... LOL..., Kidding of course... Let me explain a little why I suggested as I did... This photo could fit in different category,.. But, because of presence of professional and semi-professional photographers on this siste entering contest, it is very hard to win in those two cateogries, expecially in "landscape". Also, professional portrait photogpraphers enters in "people" category... so, it is also hard... So, I just thought of monthly theme... next month theme is "simplicity".

Nobi You are and you do (make sense) Interesting view. It seems that there's more to being competitive in a contest than having a good image.

Hi Kitty, just wanted to let you know that it's absolutely fine to resubmit to a different category. I've done it a couple of times and had it result in winners. But I still think it's important that the image fit the category. After all, it's a category contest. You could enter a great image into Elements of Design, and I don't think it would win because the judges are really looking for lines and details. That image of yours is really neat... good luck with it! Nancy

Hi Karma, you snuck in when I wasn't looking, lol... Good to know you agree on the categoory. Kit, I said all that above because I really like the image. And it's always nice to get recognition from the peer and judges..., I thought your image deserves that... Selecting the right category can be a key in the contest. Select the category in which you think the photo has the best chance of competing and perhaps winning sometimes...
