  Hi Jill! Welcome to BP!
I'm no expert, but here are my suggestions.
I'd try to get closer. Way closer. Cut out more than half of the grass in front.
You have the right idea by not centering the train. The buildings on the left could add some interest, but you are too far away right now.
Have fun - and don't go crazy and get right on the tracks!

  Hi Jill...

Dont let Diane fool you.... she is far from being an amateur (just look at her gallery the photos are fantastic!) Kudos to you Diane!! I agree with her though, get closer to the train, but be safe, please! You could even use a slower shutter speed to blur the train a bit too. I see you were at a Mercy Me concert in Ames... I live in Iowa.. best of luck to you & keeo practicing!

Smiles! ANGIE

Unlike Diane, I will claim to be an expert - which means I am admitting that I was once a stream and I'm now just a drip (ex-spurt) or I'm just plain delusional. Take your choice.

Seriously, I like your composition. I like the train off to the right with the silos and building off to the left. I agree with Diane that you should get a lot closer, if you can do so and get both the train and the silos in the picture. Alternately, you could position yourself lower to the ground and shoot from right above the grass, rather than standing above it. The main problem I see with your photo, the limited depth of field, is due to the limitations of your camera. That can be easily rectified when you move up to an SLR but the hardest part of photography is getting good composition and you are on the right track (no pun intended) here.

I am really no expert, no lying here...
...so I don't know what it's worth, not much,...but anyway,...
- I like your composition.
- get closer as memntioned above.
- speaking of capturing the motion of the train, I love the idea. I do that with automobiles but have not had the chance doing it with train...
- I love to get the spring wildflower flowers in the foreground and the train in the background.
- Get lower and focus on the wildflowers, use slower shutter speed, unless the train is moving fast, to capture the motion of the train.

I am not familiar with your camera but with some cameras you can't change the shutter speed. Check your manual to see if you can.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

the lower the number the slower the speed...not lower F-stop it would be your shutter. I am not sure how you would change it on your camera.. is it film or digital? It may have a ring around the lens to change or a dial.

There is no shuch thing as a stupid question! Changing the shutter speed is going to be different on every camera, so check your manual. If you need any more help, feel free to contact me, or anyone else, through a private message or this thread.

Sorry, Angela, Kerry and I must have been typing at the same time. Angela, her camera is digital, but it's just a Point & Shoot.
