Photography Question

Angela Fairless

What to do with flash units?

I have two britek studio lights- one with a silver umbrella and the other with a soft box. I have begun using only one because of how bright they are. I have tried every position and they seem to drown out my subject. Sometimes (even when hooked up to my Canon 20D) they don't even fire!! I am probably using them wrong- see my photo gallery of the picture of a boy in overalls- the light was too bright. If someone could help please let me know- I think this is my main problem with taking pictures.
Thanks

What exposure settings are you using on the camera? How are you choosing them? (separate flash meter, camera's meter, trial and error?)

If you cannot directly control the light's output, you can lessen the exposure they give by either moving them farther from the subject, or setting a smaller lens aperture.

If they don't fire when connected to the 20D (through the PC sync plug?) then there must be a bad connection (loose plug, broken wire in the cord, etc.).

Thanks for your response Jon. I dont have a flash meter- I know so little about my camera that I am not sure I have one on there. I have tried different exposures. I tried shooting RAW images the last time I did a shoot and my flash would not work at all- I figured that I would have to manually turn it on somewhere on my camera. I have tried moving them quit far although I have a 500 square foot room now that I have not used as of yet. Maybe some trial and error there. Would a meter help me?

  HI ANGELA,
I HAVE BRITCKS ALSO, FOR A PORTRAIT WITH DIMENTION USE THE LIGHT WITH THE SOFTBOX AS A MAIN LIGHT(IF IT'S A PRO 500 SET IT AT 1/2)-AND THE OTHER AS A BACKLIGHT(PS-200 USE AT FULL)AT LOWER BACK HIGHT-SET THE CAMERA AT 200/16 OR WITH THE D-70 TRY SHUTTER PRIORITY MODE.
YOUR SUBJECT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 36" FROM BACKDROP-CAMERA AND MAIN LIGHT AT LEAST 67" FROM THE SUBJECT.THE MAIN LIGHT SHOULD BE ABOUT 1 FOOT ABOVE THE SUJECTS HEAD POINTING AT THIER UPPER CHEST.
TRY THIS AND LET ME KNOW FROM THERE,IF POSSIBLE PLEASE POST THE BEFORE AND AFTER IT REALLY HELPS OTHERS- THIS SAME QUESTION HAS HAPPENED BEFORE BUT IT IS OLD.
I DO HOPE THIS HELPS,
DEBBY TABB
