Any manual focus lens in Nikon mount will work on your FA, but not all will activate the meter or the new shutter priority system which was introduced with the FA around 1982.

In order to take advantage of ALL the FA features, you will need to purchase "Ai-S" lenses.

In manual focus lenses, there are three series of lenses that were produced for the manual focus Nikon bodies over the years -

1. Pre Ai lenses (from the early 1960's to the early 1970's). These will mount to your FA, but will not activate the meter.

2. Ai lenses (from the early 1970's to the early 1980's). These will mount to the FA, and activate the meter for manual and aperture priority modes only.

3. Ai-S lenses (from the early 1980's to present). These lenses will activate ALL functions on the FA.

Note - You can also mount any independent lens made for Nikon (Sigma, Tamron, Vivitar, Tokina, etc.), but again, be sure it is an Ai-S variety in order to fully utilize it on your FA.

By the way, when looking at used lenses, if the ad doesn't designate which lens it is (pre ai, ai, or ais), be sure to ask! There are marks on the lens which will indicate. The Ai has an extension on the aperture ring, and the Ai-S has a "scoop" cut out in the back chrome part of the mount.

Hope this helps.

Caution - Pre- or non-AI lenses cannot be mounted to the FA without risk of damage. They can be used (and will meter) if they have been converted to AI (commonly referred to as AI'd).

Additionally, the FA can use Nikon autofocus lenses (which are all AI-S), but with the following restrictions:
(1) manual focus only (of course), and
(2) G-series lenses have no aperture ring. The FA can use G lenses in Program and Shutter-priority exposure modes, but not Aperture-priority or Manual.
