Focal length for portraits

Is there a focal lenght that is more flattering than others for portraits? I thought that I read that somewhere a long time ago, now I can't remember.

For 35mm film cameras, a focal length between 85 and 135mm is usually recommended for portraits. This would translate to between 50 and 85mm for a digital SLR with an APS-sized sensor like the Digital Rebel.

Short focal lengths, wide angle lenses, tend to distort facial features.

Thanks Chris, and what about a 200 mm zoom lens? (digital) Is that ok to use or will a shorter focal length as you mentioned still be better?

Barbara,
Cris is right - but we use what we have so if that 200 is all you have then just remember this- in a portrait you want your subject or your compisition to FILL the image- for that is a portrait:"A portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artistic representation of a person. Portraits are often simple head shots or mug shots and are not usually overly elaborate or creative. The intent is to show the basic appearance of the person, and occasionally some artistic insight into his or her personality."
I do hope thid helps,
Debby Tabb
