settings for flight pictures

Just bought a Nikon D70 with an 80-400mm vibration reduction lens. I want good flight pictures of peregrine falcons, but know very little about photography. I've been using the "Sport" setting with autofocus. Some pics come out very clear, yet some (even very close shots) are blurred, and they are especially blurred when there is a background instead of open sky. Is there a best (and easiest) way to set the camera for freeze-frame flight?

Chris, there is a technique called 'panning' for this kind of pictures. Here are a couple links that cover this technique. If you still have question, let us know.

Even With A Vr Lens You Must Use A Tripod! Pan With The Subject And Use A Fast Shutter Speed,At 400mm You Would At Least Need 1/400s For A Clear Image,These Are Fast Birds This Will Require Alot Of Practice Good Luck!!
