Studio Light with a Digital Rebel

I just bought the Canon Digital Rebel XT. It was great until I tried to use it with my studio lights and found out I had to use a Safe Sync to avoid damage from a possible power surge. I have ordered two from B&H and neither will fit my PC cord. I can force the PC cord onto the Wein Safe Sync put it still won't set off the lights. The test buttom on the Safe Sync sets off the lights though. These Safe Syncs were $49. and $69. Since they don't work it has been suggested I need to buy a slave unit called the Pocket Wizard for $330.00 That's seems a bit much. I've been shooting in the studio with a regular adapter for 3 years with my Elan 7 with no problems. I'm ready to send the Canon Rebel back! Anyone have any ideas? We only have one local camera store and they don't know what to do. I've called two large camera stores in San Francisco and they don't know what to do. Must be a problem for someone besides me....?
