Photography Question

blue sky behind people using fill flash

I will try & load the photo for you to see, but was having trouble the last time I tried. It is not a landscape photo. I was shooting a couple against a flowerbed and blue sky background.using fillflash with a diffuser. It was just before sunset, and the sky behind my subjects was very blue(colorado)The sun was off to the west and I was shooting south. I metered on the couple, which were wearing black, grey, and white. Maybe that's what the problem was. I even underexposed a few shots, but that didn't help. My sky was white.

Is the photo you're describing the one above, the thumbnail under your name? The sky is just very much brighter than your subjects.

I'd try metering just the sky, maybe -1/2 stop from that. That should give you the blue sky, and use fill flash to light your near subjects.

Thanks Jon. Yes that is the photo in the thumbnail. I will try that next time. Iv'e heard that metering on the sky solves alot of issues. I wonder if my 550ex flash I am using is too overbearing. I started using a diffuser, and that seems to really soften the flash as well. Do you know if there is a better flash for digital? I used to shoot 35mm, and used the 550ex with my elan, but I'm wondering if digital is just too sensitive to light for this flash. Thaks for your help.
