Telephoto Zoom Lens for Lumiz FZ20

Hello, all! I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ20, and would really love some more zoom (I'm going to Yellowstone and want at least a 600mm equivelent). However, the telephoto lens racks for in at $500 - $100 less than the camera itself! With the teleconverter on the camera, can I purchace another brand of telephoto lens that will fit?? I am an amateur photographer, so please excuse me if this question seems obsurd, but...would this work?
Thanks you so much for your help!
Sincerely,
Mikaela

$500 is not out of line for the Panasonic DMW-LTZ10 1.5x teleconverter. Good glass is very expensive. And making lenses larger and wider adds to the cost exponentially. The FZ20 has a very fine Leica 6-72mm f/2.8 zoom, and it requires fairly large 72mm diameter accessory filters and lenses. The LTZ10 is the very best match for this lens and will give you the 35mm film equivalent of 600mm f/2.8 with image stabilization - a combination that is not available for a professional 35mm SLR at any price. For example, the Canon EF 600 f/4L IS USM lens is over $6000. Note that the LTZ10 comes with a tripod mounting adapter, which is highly recommended. Even with the camera's image stabilization, such a long lens greatly exaggerates blurring from any camera movement, and even holding focus on a subject can be very difficult.

Found some detailed information on the LTZ10 here: http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/FZ-10/Converters/Lenses/Pana-15X.html.

There are less expensive alternatives, but they generally involve 3rd party teleconverters that are smaller diameter and require step-down rings to mount to the FZ20. These will (at best) let in less light costing 1 or more stops of light, are not as optically sharp, and at worst they'll severely vignette (cut off the image in the corners).
