Light rings use for people

I use a Nikon D-70 and want to know the effect of light rings when photographing people (examples) and which light rings are the best to invest in?

By light rings, are you referring to the ring-shaped flash attachments that can go on the end of the lens?

As far as I know, these are only used in macro (close up) photography. I'm not sure how they would work when taking a portrait at a normal distance. Most of them do not have high guide numbers, so they would not have much power beyond close-up work.

Ring lights are used for portrait, fashion a lot. The small ones for macro aren't the only ones you can get. They have an easily recognized look. Shadow around the person, real even light fall, flattens them against the background. Better if you actually saw a picture taken with one.

That's not the scene we're talking about.
