Focus with Nikkor 50mm

I like to use my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens with my Nikon D70 in low light indoors to avoid using the built-in flash. I've bumped up the ISO to 800 or greater to avoid shutter speeds of less than 60 sec. But when taking informal shots of people, like at a family gathering, it's very hard to get everyone in focus unless they are at the same distance from the camera, most especially with closeups. I've gotten lots of disappointing results.

Seems like I used this same lens in similar light with my N80, but the out of focus problem seems worse with the digital camera and makes using this lens without flash almost useless in the situations I'm describing.

Any suggestions? I love the compactness and versatility of this lens.

Thanks!

Anne
