Photography Question

portrait books/children

Does anyone recommend a good portrait book(s) for photographing kids (not babies). We're having a "bring your child to work" day in a couple weeks and I'm in charge of photographing kids with their parents. I do a lot of portraits here of adults but haven't worked with kids much. help! These need to be successful.

Also which lens for the Canon 20D would you recommend for this purpose?

Thanks. Lori

  Lori,

Search for Debby Tabb, one of the locals here on BP. She's a great portrait photographer. Well anyways she has a few CDs, like books on a CD that give a LOT of useful information. One of them is about photographing babies and the other is about family posing. they both have great information. well anyways, i'm no portrait photographer and I'm not sure what lenses you have in inventory or if you planning to buy one but a standard zoom would be superb. 28-90mm is good or the 28-135 would also work fine. other than that I couldn't give you any information without second guessing myself so best of luck to you and someone with more experience will jump in here and help before you know it. Best of luck!

V/r

Justin

  HEY LORI,
I THOUGHT MAYBE I COULD BE OF SOME HELP.
BUT FIRST JUSTIN-THANKS YOU ARE THE BEST- I DO HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THE BOOKS-JUST WAITING TO SEE MORE FROM YOU!!!:-) AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO MY PS PROJECT -I'VE BEEN OUT OF STATE CA TO NB AND BACK IN LITTLE OVER 3 DAYS- I'M BEAT! BUT I HAVE YOUR WONDERFUL HELP AND WILL LET YOU KNOW SOON.
LORI!! HEY LETS GET BACK TO YOU!
OK , I DO BELIVE THESE WILL BE AROUND THE OFFICE PORTRAITS? LETS TAKE THE MOM (OR DAD)AND CHILD AT THE COMPUTER SHOT: OK FOR ANY 2 SUBJECTS, 1/2 A HEAD DIFFERENCE IN HIGHTH.SO USE PHONE BOOKS ETC. TO BRING THE CHILD UP TO THE PARENTS EYE.1/2 A HEAD.IF A TRUE PORTRAIT THEN BRING BOTH OF THIER NOSES TOWARD YOU GIVING YOU FULL EYES AND A SLIGHT HEAD(PARENTS) TILT TOWARD THE CHILD.2) AGAIN 1/2 HEAD HIGHTH DIFFERENCE-BOTH LOOKING AT THE COMPUTER(ON THIS IF YOU CAN USE A OFF CAMERA FLASH ON A TRI PODTO THE SIDE OF COMPUTER TOWARD THE SUBJECT. FRAME THIS AT DESK OR ELBOW.MAKING IT A ARM POSE.3) SAME SHOT BUT PUT PARENT AT COMPUTER AND CHILD ON BOOKS OR STOOL BEHIND THEM WITH ARMS AROUND LEANING OVER PARENTS SHOULDER GET THIS SHOT FROM THE BACK AND TO THE SIDE OF THE COMPUTER.
OFFICE SHOTS THINGS LIKE A PICNIC ON THE FLOOR W/ DESK AND COMPUTER IN THE BACK GROUND.2) PARENT WITH PAD AND PEN ON SECRETARY'S SIDE OF BOSSES DESK AND CHILD WITH FEET UP ON DESK AS IF GIVING DICTATION TO THIER PARENT AND THE CHILD IS THE BOSS.
3) CHILD IN PARENTS ARM LOOKINGH OUT A WINDOW AS IF TO SERVAY ALL THAT IS THE PLANT OR OFFICE VIEW ETC.
THESE WOULD BE A FEW-I DO HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. 1 OR 2 OFF CAMERA FLASHES( SLAVED) WILL HELP WITH THESE AND OF COURSE A FL FILTER TO CUT THE YELLOWING FROM FLORESENT LIGHTS.
I HOPE THIS HAS BEEN SOME HELP(CHECK MY GALLERY FOR 1/2 HEAD HIGHTH POSES) AND OF COURSE IF YOU NEED MORE OR SOMETHING ELSE PLEASE JUST SAY SO,
DEBBY

Debby T-thank you for your detailed response. We're actually going to set up in one area with a back drop and have everyone come there. The child age range will start at 8 thru teens. So I'll probably have different seating options etc. as some people will have more than one child. The deeper I get into photography, the more I learn how much I have to learn. Do you have a good way to put the kids at ease and get a relaxed expression? Lori

  Lori,
oh, this IS the question from all the photographers that come to my classes!
well, let me start by saying if you are at ease with them you will do better- kids and pets know when you are nervous. this instills fear. So, you need to practise if you can, friend and family's kids(not your own)
ok, heres a couple ways(and I'll be able to hear you laughin')
ok , eating bubbles: you not them- bubbles photograph so you must be in control- you blow a few and then pick them out of the air and eat them and make the smaking noises and say yummmm thats good-in a "cookie monster voice"
you can also carry one on the wand to them and let them eat it(now just in case,i'm sure all of you know they will pop so your eating nothing)
2) a sneeze- that's right - go ahh, ahhh, ahhhhhchewww! and as your on the last ahhhchew bend all the way over as if it took your whole body to sneeze and throw your head back up. they usually crack up!
*****as in any children and pet photography a remote is a BIGG help.***
2) take a stuffed teddy (or any type of stuffed toy)and play kiss the baby- not right in the face- pooh's gonna kiss you-and walk real slow(this creates a intrest in the child to watch you - what will you do next?)and have pooh kiss the childs cheek softly and drag it away toward your eyes or chest(this brings wondering eyes towards you and trains them to keep looking to you for the next trick)
ok a little older kid-boys and gils 6 to 8 ask them if they have a girl or boy friend, favorite cartoons, have them say ice cream or candy or pizza(NOT CHEESE! THE FACE LOOKS FORCED WITH CHEESE)Money! have them say stinky feet! or daddy has stinky feet- if there are brothers and sisters find out one name and say ok joey has stinky feet.
any older- pizza and money work or ask what thier girl friend or boyfriend's name is " I know you have one common' tell me, tell me" this should get them going and if a sibling is involved all the better.
these are a few - I do hope this helps,
Debby Tabb
