Photography Question

Lisa Carpenter

Situation auto or manual????

I have friends asking me to take candid outdoor B&W photos. Most of my shots have been in studio. When doing candid shots in natural light, do you put the camera on full auto or do you meter for the pictures? Do I use fill flash for most or all? What gives some B&W photos that rich contrast outside? Do you meter for highlights or shadows? Can anyone help me please???

There are so many variables when shooting outdoor like angle of light source, the weather (sunny, overcast, cloudy, ...), if the group is under shade, etc. It is always good to use fill flash to add a little light to the subject. Different camera (digital or film) or film (true B&W or the Kodak TCN type that can be processed like color film) has different exposure latitude. When in doubt, always meter on the subject. Hope this helps a little.
