Importing RAW pictures from Canon 20D to Photoshop

I want to shoot photos with my Canon 20D in the RAW mode. However, when I try to transfer them to the computer, it won't accept the RAW images. I use Photoshop 7. What do I need to do? Thank you. Bing

I only shoot RAW, but I use PS Elements 3.0 to process. Your camera should have come with Digital Photo Professional software which allows you to do minor editing on your RAW photos and convert them to TIFF or Jpeg. That's what I did before getting Elements 3.0 which came with a RAW editor (which I really like). I believe the Digital Photo Pro allows you to batch process as well, which I never do being a control freak that I am!

Karma is right, your camera should come with DPP. Click on the thumbnail, file and save as a Jpeg

  Karma, Sara, and Howie,
Thank you all for your responses. I will try some of the options, such as upgrading to CS2. Bing

  Bing,

I went this same problem but with elements 3.0.
Go to adobe .com and find the free plug in for the RAW converter. After you download that open your photshop and then open the edit in photoshop(not the edit tab at the top but the one in the photoshop list) then click on preferences then pull down and find the plug-ins and scratch disk option. Choose that then find your downloaded plug-in and choose it.
That is what made it possible for me to use the RAW converter on mine. If you need any more help feel free to ask.
You need to have the RAW converter active to use it. The software that came with my camera did not work so I had to go this route.

Mike.

  Hi,

There is one good software provided by Canon (Free) called ZoomBrowser.
U can download it, it has a good features to manage all ur images, puttin comments on them and rating them etc. It opens up a dialog to download images from camera and can download raw images. When u want to edit the picture raw images will be opened with DPP and JPG images can be opened with any edior u want, u just need to set it once. After getting this software my life has become easier. Otherwise I had terrible time in managing all files.

I hope u people will also like it.

How much "editing" is actually done in RAW before converting to a TIFF? I am download challenged and do not understand all the steps to download the thing I need so my PHotoshop Elements 3.0 will open RAW photos for me. I have the program that came with my camera(Maxxum 7D) but I found it pretty useless as far as editing goes other than it would allow me to shoot in RAW and be able to covert? OTher than the white balance what changes would I expect to make?

Michelle, you can do most things with Rawshooter WB, saturation, sharpness, and alot more, but it does not permanently change the RAW file, it converts your edited RAW to jpeg or tiff so you still have your untouched RAW as a backup. I found Rawshooter very easy to use once you had a fiddle with it, downloading from your memory card or camera it works like windows explorer have a look at the website just read and follow instructions, there is full support from the website in pdf format so you can read it till you undrestand, give it a go

Dear all, I took Howie's advice to upgrade to cs2, I was watching the video demo, it seems great, you can do a lot more and easier then PS7, beside the raw features. now I just have to study them.
thank you very much. bing
