Minolta Dimage 7 Hi, Anyone know where to get the Dimage 7 2.0 firmware without having to pay $50. I have already poured money into camera, bag, filters, kits, batteries, cards...ahh.

You can download it free from Konica-Minolta Product Support - Software.

I was going to answer the same thing, Jon. But if you go a little further, you will see a message that indicates the free download is ONLY an update to the "upgraded" firmware that you have to purchase on CD. This is the first time I've heard of a manufacturer charging for a firmware update. I guess instead of correcting bugs, the update is adding new features. I still think it stinks and I don't even own the camera. Patrick - search the web and the newsgroups. You should find a free "evaluation" copy somewhere. I'm not suggesting that you use bootleg software, of course. No, not me, never.

D'oh! Sorry, you're right. Silly me. I can kind of see Minolta's point in charging for this as an accessory as it's not a correction for any problems and is not necessary for proper camera function. On the otherhand ... I would expect that there would be DIY "hacks" available to do the same things. Note that these would not be unethically/illegally pirated or bootlegged software, but independently written firmware updates - like the famous "Russian hack" for the EOS 300D/Digital Rebel.

I downloaded the hack for the Digital Rebel, and haven't had the guts to try it out yet.

P.S. for Patrick My curiosity piqued, I've done a quick search and found this site that you and other DiMage 7 users may find useful: http://webpages.charter.net/bbiggers/DCExperiments/html/body_dimage_7_.html. Among many useful articles and FAQs is a comparison of a 7UG (the 7 with v2.0 installed) to a later model 7i. Instead of being peeved at the $50 cost, the author's POV is one of appreciation that Minolta continues to support this discontinued model, where other manufacturer's simply abandon old models.
