Photography Question

Bobbi S. Tomes

How do I get a foot in the door?

Everyone goes nuts over my portraits. They ask why I am not doing this for a living. All my friends, and friends of friends, and family want free or dirt cheep photos done by me. I have not gotten any response to flyers I have hung around town so far. Also, I dont have a "real" studio, I just shoot in my home, thiers, or outdoors. Not having a building does noit effect my pics but how can I get any real clients??? I am disscouraged.

Hi Bobbi, me again, when I see this image, my first reaction is, is there details in the highlights (the right side of the baby's face is blown out) then is there details in the shadows (the whole left side of the image) it is very distracting to me to have everythign in shadow and you can't see anything. If you had it in shadow and you could see some details (skin-tone) it would be a more stunning image. Just a friendly suggestion.

YES, I SEE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT DEAIL IN THE SHADOW. ACTUALLY THIS WAS HONESTLY NOT A WONDERFUL PIC TO BEGIN WITH. THIS IS MY DAUGHTER AND SHE WAS HUNGRY AND WOULDNT STOP MOVING. MY DIGITAL IS BAD FOR CATCHING MOTION. THIS WAS THE CLEAREST PIC I GOT OF HER AND I TURNED IT BLACK AND WHITE AND ADDED CONTRASR TO TRY AND MAKE WHAT WAS BLUR LOOK ARTISTIC. IF YOU COULD SEE THE ORIGIONAL (WHICH ISNT IN MY COMPUTER RIGHT NOW, YOU WOULD BE IMPRESSED THAT I SAVED IT AT ALL. I CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE LIKED MORE DETAIL.

WOULD YOU CALL THIS ONE A BETTER EXAMPLE OF DETAIL IN SHADOW? I NEED CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISIZM. I WANT TO KNOW ALL I CAN SO WHEN I DO GET CLIENTS I CAN BE 100% READY FOR THEM. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITS I HAVE DONE BECAUSE THERE IS MUCH EMOTION IN HIS EYES.

Like the picture. like the pose. The one suggestion I have is to use a reflector board to the left of the subject. It needs a bit more detail in the shadows.

I agree with Kerry, also make 110% sure that when you photograph a person face-on, that their eyes are as sharp as they can be. It almost looks as if (as we look at it) the left eye is soft. I love the picture and the pose.

I would like to make some suggestions about lining up new clients. I just featured my photo studio in our local parade. I made t-shirts for kids of my daycare to help promote. I also had a booth after the parade to display my work and offered a drawing for a free photo session and three 8x10'S. That created a mailing list. All of this created a lot of exposure and cost very little money. Try something like that. Family and friends all want the ir photos done for little or nothing. You can't make any money that wat but by doing free photos for family you get exposure and that helps. Good luck Pat
