Photography Question

BetterPhoto Member

how do I shoot alone?

I was asked to assist at a wedding and thought it would be fun. The photographer schooled my a little and showed me countless albums. Now she tells me that the couple that was supposed to get married on this day had almost broken up and canceled the wedding. Now they were going through with it, but the photogrpaher had already booked another wedding in the mean time. So now she wants me to shoot it while she shoots the other. She told me to shoot it on program and Raw and she can fix any mistakes on PS. Talk about getting pushed off a cliff. I did ask her if there were any other photographers that could do it and she said no because its high season. Any tips on anything would help
Yikess!

  BRUCE,
JUST JUMP!- IT SEEMS AS IT MAY BE HER REP. THAT WILL SUFFER IF THINGS DON'T GO PERFECT.
HAVE YOU EVER ASSISTED OR SEEN A WEDDING SHOT? HOW MUCH EXPERIANCE DO YOU HAVE?
LETS ASSUME YOU ARE AT EASE WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHY END. WELL THEN GET YOURSELF A POSING LIST AND LOOK THROUGH BOOKS ECT.I CAN SEND YOU A POSING LIST IF YOU NEED ONE AND I AND MANY OTHERS HAVE BOOKS ON THE SUBJECT OF POSING(SEE MY GALLERY)
IS SHE GOING TO SUPPLY THE EQUIPTMENT NEEDED? - YOU WILL NEED EXTRA FLASHES, LENS ECT. DON'T LET THIS SCARE YOU- WHY DON'T YOU WRITE BACK WITH MORE INFO. ABOUT WHAT YOU DO HAVE AND DON'T- AND WHAT SHE IS WILLING TO DO FOR YOU- WE CAN ALL HELP YOU FROM THERE.
AND MOST IMPORTRANT FOR YOUR FIRST WEDDING - IS THIS UNDER HER CONTRACT OR NOT?
PLEASE POST THAT INFO AND WE WILL HELP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE(ALSO PLEASE READ OTHER THREADS ON FIRST WEDDINGS-THIS TOO WILL HELP YOU COME TO A CORRECT DECISSION.)
THANKS ,
DEBBY

I have a digital canon and a digital olympus, 420 ex, 70-200 & 24-70, 7 gigs and a light meter. The photographer said "shoot only candids, no posed shots ( she thinks they're old fashion)." With 7 gigs I should be alright and I'll shoot everything possible.

  S.M.,
BOY, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT CONCEPT.
MOST WEDDING PARTIES WANT THE CANDIDS AS WELL AS THE POSED. THE TRADTIONAL POSED SHOTS ARE STILL THE MAIN PART OF MOST ANY WEDDING ALBULM . BESIDES THE FACT THAT MOST WEDDING PARTIES PAY SO MUCH FOR THIER PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT THEY WANT TO GET THE MOST THEY CAN OUT OF IT -BY WAY OF WEDDING PARTY, FAMILY FROM BOTH SIDES( MOST WEDDINGS CONSIST OF FAMILY AND GUESTS THAT MAY NOT ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE)
I WOULD JUST THINK THAT THROUGH - YOUR BOSSES DESISSION IS THIER OWN-BUT AS YOU MOVE FORWARD- IT WOULD BE IN YOUR BEST BEHALF TO KNOW THE TRADIONAL AND THE CREATIVE AND THE CANDID.
JUST AN OPINION,
DEBBY

Justin, you can't even keep your own bull straight. You asked the question with a new 6/29 account named Bruce something, then after you changed the name to match your 6/27 S. Mitchell account, you answered this question in the same character with the photo shoot, but with your 6/27 account.

Is anyone fooled?

It's the same guy, Debby. He had been using an account called Steven Ford, then Steven F, then just Ford. He apparently got bored with that and opened new accounts called S. Mitchell, and the one that started this thread which was originally called Bruce something, then he changed it to S. Mitchell also, so that one of his accounts could accuse the other account of using her name.

He seems to have a lot of fun playing these games, but you spent some of your time giving good advice to a clown who you thought was asking a sincere question. It's frustrating, isn't it? This is the only reason that I keep jumping in to expose his bull. People keep saying to ignore him, but he gets honest people to fall for his games.

Justin G. - The guy we're talking about hangs around here and uses multiple accounts and changes the names on the accounts fairly often. I usually refer to him as Justin, because he used that name for a while.

He has also gone by Steve, Slick Digital, Digital King, Savy, No Name to Fame, Ford, and just recently, Sara Mitchell.

He's pretty easy to spot. He's very immature, likes to brag about how much money he makes, and he likes to brag about having or getting the Canon Mark II because it's very expensive.

This is indeed very sad, to waste people's time and advice. Funny to see that once you stepped in Chris he hasn't been back. Hmmm. I think it's great Chris that you expose who he really is, saves us all a hassle. So, thanks!

Chris you're great! I always knew I liked you. Anyways I'll have to watch out for Sara Justin Ford, whatever! Now this Canon Mark II deal...picture this.

**For reference sake please all know that I don't claim to be a pro yet myself!**

Keep in mind this guy buying a Mark II with my analogy...Just because you buy the brand new 2006 Mustang GT doesn't mean you know how to drive it or will ever be good at driving it. Not saying he's a bad photographer, but he needs to put more walk with the talk!

P.S. To everyone else on BP: You're great!

"THE TRADTIONAL POSED SHOTS ARE STILL THE MAIN PART OF MOST ANY WEDDING ALBULM"

Hey Debby, and you said that so absolutely. I would say that most my albums have one maybe two traditional posed shots. All the rest are "candids".

I spend about 15 minutes on posed stuff, then move on. My training is in PJ, and fortunately, it's 'in' right now. So, I'm in my zone.

So, traditional stuff is totally out, in my neck of the woods.

  well,
all I can say is we shoot it all and give quite a complete! Wedding service.
and we rarely Book a package that is under $1,500.00 .So I belive that again you do what is good for you.And what has been proven GOOD for us is to complete each wedding with posed and candids and work off the very extensive pose list we have.
and I want to appoligize for being SHORT- but I do think I will but this thread to rest as it has become a joke and a game for some.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN GAMES ARE PLAYED ON WHAT IS A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE WANTS TO LEARN SOMETHING- THEN EVERYONE LOSSES! AND IT'S A SHAME THAT YOU HAVE TO RUIN A GOOD THING FOR EVERYONE ELSE" DR.EVIL"
***IF Y0UR REALLY GOOD LETS SEE A GALLERY.

That's the other thing, I don't do lists. I threw them out 2 years ago. My life has been much happier since. If I'm looking at a list, I can't be shooting. And, since I'd rather be shooting, I did away with lists.

I too provide full coverage from beginning to end, from getting ready, to the end (whenever that might be).

My new endeavour is to second shoot all my weddings. It provides more flexibility and creatively. I've done it a few times this year, and it works out really well. I hire a fully qualified photographer to shoot with me as the main. This way I sneak around and shoot anything I want, freeing me up to be creative and not worry about the boring safe stuff because I know it will be covered. It's a real eye-opener, if you haven't tried it. You "see" weddings differently.

I am trying to work this into a standard for all my weddings.

This whole website has become a joke due to one member. But, I'm trying to just ignore that person. I was referred here by a friend of mine, and have enjoyed my time here, mostly.

Debby & Joe: You are two sides of the same coin. One (Debby) is the traditional side, which provides traditional coverage (posed and candids) and the other (Joe) is a PJ. Different brides want different types of coverage and each of you provides what YOUR customers want. I am more in the style of the traditional but I will admit that I enjoy shooting the candid side a lot more. I shoot the posed shots because that is what my customers want. If I get one that only wants candid coverage, I am happy to oblidge.

BTW, I don't see how you can say this site has become a joke because of one member. He has at least 3 names right now, and they change pretty rapidly. Two are male and one is female. Guess he swings both ways.

just a note to you Joe,
We have been shooting in teams for a while now (1-3 photographers per event-any event)
and I love it, until I get stuck behind this computer-usually 4000 shots that must be reviewed and edited.
that part sucks.but YOU will have a great time both with your team mates and the ease of covering everything.
and I disagree totally- this site is one of the BEST!! I tryed to partiapate in another site- and out of the 4500 members only 6 -8 of the same people chimed in because when you had a difference of opinion they let you have it!and they had NO talerence for people like myself that have good and bad days-if I used caps(on a bad day) I was told not to post! really don't post!!. I LOVE IT HERE on this site and the poeple HAVE been WONDERFUL!
but this is just my opinion.
and I'm keepin' it(regardless of "SYBIL"),
Debby

Just as a point of clarification, I have been shooting in teams for years. I have a crew, usually a 2nd shooter, and an assistant (who also shoots some), and sometimes even a third shooter. The difference for me is that I am moving myself into the role of a second shooter, while another photographer becomes the main. It is a fundamental shift in thinking. But, I function better as a second because I can free my mind. The client just needs to understand this, when it's time for formals, I wont be doing the work. So, convincing brides that this is how I do things, is the challenge. I just need some more time to make the case and show results of it. Once I get there, it will be a piece of cake.

hi Debb, your confused because the question was from Ford, Dr.Evil and then try to play me off as him/or her. I tried to get another post out by playing out the question to show that the member begin date was different, but caught (lets call it "IT")messed up on another thread. So Im Sara and Ive been shooting weddings for a little while now(with an assistant)would never shoot alone

Why are we all getting caught up in the little high school battle? Don't worry about this one guy ( or girl) who wants to act childish. This is a great site with great people and great artists, lets not ruin the reputation of the site to our newcomers who are looking up to you pro's with lots of experience. Just ignore this Dr. Evil Ford Justin guy or whatever and we'll all be on our way.
And to Elizabeth Coachmen, I know you're only 14 so please ignore the high school comment, I'm just using it as a figure of speach. You seem like a well rounded girl with a great head on your shoulders and you're great at what you do!!!

Actually, I started typing my post before I saw your post. I was interrupted by a phone call, then finished. I didn't see your post until I went back to the thread.

My post was a response to Joe's description of his second-shooter approach at weddings. I'm curious.

I think you should know by now, that if I had something to say to you, good or bad, I would come right out and say it.
