How to use a black card shooting fireworks

I have a Fuji Fine pix S7000. my setting for shooting fireworks would probably be on "B" and an apature of f/8. But I have heard something about a black card that you put in front of the lens between bursts. I dont really know the tricks or timming to this black card. Does anyone have any advice for me on this ?

The idea is to just hold the black card in front of the lens to cut down the amount of stray light getting in between bursts.

If you are in a very dark spot, without a lot of stray light polution, the black card is not entirely necessary. You need to just experiment and see what works best.

If you use the card, try not to bump the camera during an exposure.

Chris has good advice... are you using a cable release? Just hold in the cable release, take the black card away from the lens during the desired fireworks burst. Then replace the card over the lens still holding in the cable release. Repeat this until you have desired amount of bursts in the pic then release the shutter. Start over on the next exposure. It works good! Chris also said be careful not to bump the tripod during exposure & that is good advice. Good luck!

Thank you so much Chris and Angela for responding to my question. I ended up useing my SLR camera like a coward, I was afraid they wouldnt come out. I noticed when I took some shots yesterday at a local display, I wanted to test the first roll withought a black card and then the second roll with the black card.. well lets just say, I never got to the second roll. For some reason my camera was not grabbing the film and ov course I got frustrated and after about 5-20 min getting closer to the end of the display I decided to just enjoy the rest of the show watching instead of shooting. I was so upset it didnt work out for me to try. Anyways I went home and I figured out what was wrong. So I will be trying it out on my next display I go to. The first roll came out well, but there were a few shots when I left the shutter open longer, They looked a lil lighter then the rest, probably becuse the longer I leave the exposure open more light gets into the shot .. am I right on this? Thank you again for your comments . Ill let you know how they come out with the black card. Cynthia
