What lens - Nikkor 70-300mmm or 55-200 mm Hello to all ... I like to purchase a Telezoom Lens. What would you recommand: Nikkor 70-300 mm (ED or G) or the brand new Nikkor 55-200 mm. I have a Nikon D70. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!!! Bianca

Bianca, I'm assuming you already have a standard zoom lens that goes up to about 60 or 70 maybe even up to about 135. Well basically what I'm saying is that you probably already have the 55 - 70 mm range covered so you wouldn't really need the lower end of the 55-200mm. Now I'm pretty new to photography myself (only 1 year now) but I recently bought a 75-300mm Canon but using my sisters 70-210mm, I can personally contest that having a 300mm is great. That extra boost from 200 to 300 is very nice to have, makes such a big difference, so all in all if you're able to put up the money for the 70-300mm I would greatly greatly recommend it. If you don't use one now, I would recommend getting a really sturdy tripod. My first tripod was a $20 cheapo and it broke with the weight of my telezoom. Have fun with your new tele. Justin

Thank you Justin! I have to laughs, because I have a cheapo too and so I guess forget this and go shopping for a new tripod, LOL. The lens what I have right now is 18-70 mm and I love it, just not enough. It sounds right to go for the extra boost, but I will sleep over. Thanks so much again. Bianca

I don't know the prices you're looking at but if the 300mm is only a few dollars different, I seriously recommend saving the few extra bucks up and getting it. It just seems like to me that if I play with a 200 mm, lots of shots are "almost there". But with the 300 you can get so much more closer to the subject. Seriously its worth it. I feel bad that my sis is using a 210, I wish I had the money to buy her a 300. Well all in all its your decision and money, and whatever you do buy, I'm sure you'll use it to the fullest and give us some great pics to talk about! V/R Justin

Hi Bianca. I recently purchased the D70 and have a 28-80mm D-series lens and the 70-300mm G-series lens. I have been very satisfied with my 28-80mm on the D70 but, the 70-300mm always seems to be lacking in sharpness. I have tried using the 70-300mm with a tripod and the remote but, it still isn't nearly as sharp as I would like it to be. Also, it's not a very fast lens either. If you can afford it get the better lens. I am definetly missing the use of it right now. It may not be time to retire my N80 just yet. :)

Thank you Nicole I appreciate you taking the time for a answer. I think I will go with the better one. What do you think of sigma lenses (70-300mm)?

I have the Sigma lens and I love it. I use it more than the one that came with the camera!

Bianca, my Nikkor 28-80mm D lens broke so I have been using my 70-300mm G a lot. I take it back what I said about it not being as sharp. The last few pictures I have taken with it have been just as sharp as the D-lens. (In my gallery the Skitz, Milo, and bird shots) I have not tried Sigma.. but I may consider it since I AM lens shopping now! I can't make up my mind what I want yet.

Nikon's 70-300mm for the price is an excellent value. It is "soft" beyond 200mm's, which is great for portraits, but not for landscapes etc... ;) The trick is to use this lens at smaller aperatures if possible. Wide open at 300mm is not the way to use this lens.

Thank you Nicole and Pete ..... Last time I tried from a friend the 70-300mm AF from Nikkor and it wasn't bad. Of course I had to use a tripod, my hand wasn't study enough - or I was just to excited (smile). Now I am not sure if I like to go deeper in portraits or landscaping. First I was sure landscaping, but now I have some fun with kids. I guess, I have to choice first with category. Thanks so much again. Bianca
