what to do with power lines I live in a third floor apartment and have a perfect spot for shooting sunrise shots and the full moon, as well as hilo bay. My problem? Power Lines. There all over the island. I drove up the saddle saturday hoping to get some work done and all the way to the 7,000 foot elevation I couldn't shoot the mountain or cinder cones w/o running into power lines. Help, how do I get rid of them in my shots when they're all over the place?

Shoot the picture then clone them out.

OK, you're asking the resident expert on digital & Photoshop. LOL If you don't have an image editing program, or are not sure how to use one, just take the file to a photo lab and ask them to clone them out.

Mary jo, Cloning isn't difficult if you just know where to start. Are you using any software photo editing program (such as Photoshop Elements or Paintshop Pro)? If so, look for the clone tool--looks like a rubber stamp. Read the Help on clone tool to see how to use it. With a little trial and error, you'll soon get the hang of removing things from your photos. VR John

Good one, Kerry. A little more on the clone process: What you're basically doing is copying a clear part of the sky and pasting it on top of the power line. The clone tool makes it easy to do this, and with practice, you can make it look more natural.

Do you have photoshop? Which one? The healing brush in PS 7 is quite good also for getting rid of power lines.

Carolyn and Mary jo, PS Elements 3 also has the healing brush. Carolyn is absolutely right, in fact the healing brush just might be the better choice. John

Wow, thanks everyone. I'll practice, I have a couple programs I can use. I really appreciate all the feedback and critique. no matter how much i've studied photography and worked in the field I'm always happy to learn more. I did baby portrait photography for Growing Families for 8 years and it's nice to shoot something besides new borns, they were wonderful, but challenging and 8 years was long enough. maholo nui loa (thanks) again and I do love the site. mj
