How could this be better?

I was hoping for some insight as to how this could be improved ie: contract/brightness ect. I am using PS elements 3.0 I am new to the editing and B&W

I would increase the brightness a little, until you have a nice bright white in your highlights. Should the blanket be white, or was it a color closer to the tone that is shown?

Thank you for the compliment Tory! This was one of those hurry and shhot hoping for the best. Chris thanks for the input, I may have gone a bit far, I am having a bit of a hard time since it depends upon the angle of my screen. Thanks again and I have always enjoyed you inputs to so many Q&A's. many times you have been very helpful.

I think that the second one looks better. This is a really great shot! Maybe try an unsharpen mask on the fingers, because they are a little blury.

Nice improvement, Shon. This is a nice image. I really like the look in the baby's eyes.

Next time you shoot a portrait like this, if you use a smaller aperture (higher f-stop number), you will have a better chance of getting the face and hands in focus.

Brendan, I am rather new to the editing I played a bit with the unsharp filter although I was not having much luck making any improvements. I have added a gradiant although it seemed to take away from the picture.
