Proper Exposure When Shooting a Bride

As an amateur photographer shooting some wedding photos for a friend of mine, I just want to confirm that the proper exposure should always be based on the skin tones of the bride and/or groom etc. I use spot metering and could use my hand if needed. I should meter the skin tones and use that exposure with black and white or color film.
