aperture and speed What is the slowest speed for like a party without getting a blurred motion? 1/30, 1/60, 1/125? With or without a flash, prefer not to use a flash.

It depends on the focal length of the lens and how steady your hand is. With a normal lens, 1/60 is a good idea - unless you can hold the camera REALLY steady.

Thanks for your response, Shooting outdoor at dusk party I normal shoot studio stills. But have been asked to shoot a party at dusk. What lens would you recomend. I have a canon eos-1ds, canon 28-105mm 3.5, canon 85mm 1.5, and a canon 70-200mm 2.8 is. Someone else has asked me to shoot a party indoors same question. I also have a canon 580ex flash, but would rather not use the flash if I can get away with it. Hands are steady.

I would carry all three and use whichever seemed to fit the occasion - depending on whether you are shooting groups or tight individual shots. Of course, the longer you go with the zoom, the higher you need to bump up the shutter speed. I would carry the flash, just in case (which I am sure you will - dumb suggestion.)

Thanks for the response. I will probably put the 70-200mm on my D60. Was just trying to get away with carrying everything. ISO? I was going to try and shot at around 400 ISO and in Raw. Good idea? I have 2-1gig cards, engough? I have no ideas how many pictures an event will consume. Thanks again for the help.

You will probably have to bump the ISO up some if you don't use flash. Enough memory - Hey I'm an old film guy. How am I to know? LOL

LOL, Okay then about how many shots do you shoot at a party of about 60 people...

It varies, depending on what the customer wants. Since you shoot digital, you can fire away at will and give them as many as they want to pay for. I usually contract for a minimum of 90 - using a MF camera that translates into 6 rolls. Less than that it isn't worth the time.

FYI On my EOS IDs that a one gig card gives me about 80 shots shooting in RAW mode. Another question though - I have a Speedlite 580EX flash and was wondering how many shots I can get on one set of batteries. Thanks, again

The battery question is very tough to say. It varies because the power level of each flash burst will vary according to the exposure. At a wedding, I was able to get close to 300 shots on a set of NiMH batteries in my 420EX before I noticed the recycle slowing down. The 580EX is more powerful, so it might go through batteries faster. Don't know. I can definitely say that you will get the best results from a freshly-charged set of NiMH batteries, compared to Alkalines or NiCads. The next step up would be some type of accessory battery pack. I would bring a spare set just in case.
