Photography Question

Cost of all the digital equiptment--is it worth it

i really want to get a camera, and over the last few years I have researched a lot about photography and have learned a lot. I am a highschool student who is a beginner (besides a few classes I took) to photography but not to art. I would say that I am intersted in pursuing a career in the arts, but now that I am seriously considering getting a camera, I am wondering if all of the equiptment that you have to buy is worth it.

I have been looking at the digital rebel xt and I know it is a good camera, but is it true that you also have to get some kind of software for your computer to manage and edit the digital images? I have a mac ibook G4 and have used photoshop but I would say I do not know its complete depths. If I bought all of this it would be close to $2000 which I ( and my parents) think is a lot of money to spend for a hobby ( I guess thats what you could call it for now). So, now my question: Do you recommend any computer program like photoshop for maybe less money? Do I even need to a computer program like that?

I know that film cameras are cheaper but wouldn't I need access to a darkroom to get the kind of pictures that I want?

As you can see I have a lot of questions, but I would love some words of wisdom from more experienced photographers, or just thoughts and answers in general. Thanks.

I was in your same situation a few months ago except that I was at a community college not H/S. To be honest, yes it's worth it, you can start of with Photoshop Elements which is so much cheaper than the full version of Photoshop, or if you have your heart set on Photoshop what you can do is buy it through your local community college bookstore, this way you get the educational verison which is much cheaper as well. The digital rebel is way under $1000 so if funds are short go grab that camera. WHat I did, because I knew that I would be later upgrading because the rebel is a starting off camera, I just went and purchased the pro-grade camera to begin with. I bought it off of E-bay (be very careful about it and do your research and only buy stuff new!) for $1300 instead of $2500 so I got quite the deal. Also, I put it on a interest free credit card and after the year of "free interest" the camera was all paid off. Another option to go is to stick with film and to just buy a negitive scanner ($200-$500) so when you get your film processed at the local Walgreens you can then scan the negitives and work with the new digital files and print them digitally. Hope this helps.

  DANNY ,
I AGREE WITH JULIE - DO WATCH ON EBAY YOU CAN FIND QUITE A FEW GOOD DEALS ON CAMERA OUTFITS(D70,3 LENS, 2 CASES, 2 TRIPODS,2 GIG CARD AND READER,3 FILTERS,CARD HOLDER AND CLEANING KIT FOR $1,200.00) BUT YOU CAN ALSO LOOK THERE FOR YOUR PHOTO SHOP AS WELL.
I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU A YEAR AND 1/2 AGO I WOULD NEVER GO DIGITAL- AND BOY THIS IS THE TICKET! YOU CAN GO MOBILE WITH YOUR LAPTOP AND SHOOT ON SITE ANYWHERE,MY TEAM HAS SET UP MOBIL TEAMS AT RODEOS, BMX PARKS, FAMILY EVENTS, PET STORE ETC,
SHOOT, SHOW ,PRINT- WHILE THEY WAIT!
THIS IS WHY YOUR LARGE COMPANIES ARE STRUGGLING(OM , SEARS, CPI, ETC) YOU STILL HAVE TO WAIT 2 WEEKS FOR PORTRAITS-GO TO THE PICTURE PEOPLE AND SOME CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHER WHO HAS SET UP AT THE LOCAL PET STORE ETC. AND YOU'LL HAVE THEM WHILE YOU WAIT.
PLUS, THE OTHER PEOPLE HERE CAN SHOW YOU ENDLESS WAYS TO MENIPULATE DIGITAL IMAGES- THIS I AM LEARNING DAY BY DAY WITH A LOT OF THEIR HELP.
MAYBE, IF YOUR FOLKS HAVE A IDEA OF A PRICE RANGE - YOU CAN MATCH IT OR JUST MAKE UP THE DIFFERANCE.AND THE BEST ADVICE THAT I CAN GIVE IS MAKE UP YOUR MIND WHAT YOU 'D LIKE TO WORK WITH :FILM OR DIGITAL, AND GET A CAMERA(SLR) THAT WILL LET YOU ENJOY IT AND WORK WITH IT FOR SOMETIME BEFORE YOU NEED TO UPGRADE- AND MAKE IT A BRAND THAT YOU FEEL YOU WANT TO STAY WITH SO AS YOU INVEST IN LENS THEY WILL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT BODY WITH YOU.
I DO HOPE THIS HELPS,
DEBBY
