easy way to understand layers

I own several good Photoshop CS books and many other instructional books, as well. To date, I have been unable to reach an understanding of how to use the layers palette to enhance an image. I would like a step-by-(easy)step instruction that will help me use this tool. (Perhaps a simple example, using one of my own images, would be of help. Is there a book devoted solely to the understanding and use of layers? I would appreciate any helpful info on how to solve this problem.

Is there something that you specifically want to do(For example, take a color image, change it to B&W then bring out the color in one thing)? Or what in general do you want to do? Tell us and we should be able to tell you how to do it. About a book just about layers, I doubt it. There might be book about layers and some other stuff, but probably not just about layers.

Layers is the backbone of most PS editing. There are books available devoted to it. However, here is a simple analogy to get you started -

Imagine a cartoonist drawing pictures on a sheet of clear acetate. Then drawing another picture on another sheet of acetate, then laying the two sheets on top of each other. This is the essence of Layers. The artist can work on either sheet without affecting what's on the other.
Most of the time, PS will create a new layer when necessary. You can drag the layers up and down the palette to create a hierarchy. Any layer on top of another will affect what's underneath it, but not what's on top of it. For instance, a Levels or Color balance Adjustment Layer will only affect what is below it.
