Photography Question

Newbie Lookin for a Camera... completely LOST!!!

hi, I have always had a great interest in photography but have never really pursued much further than the standard 35mm camera or point n shoot digital (good ol sony cybershot).... anyways... I want to invest in a real nice camera to play around with so I can finally take some courses and actually learn how to do this...
im looking for a nice durable, lightweight SLR camera with plenty of options as well as a controllable exposure setting and as little noise as possible...
im from northern alberta, my house was back in the bush on an acrage, so my passion really is for the northern lights and I would die to be able to photograph them (i read that you need long exposure time and noise reduction in order to do this well), they're out EVERY night at home (just cant see em in summer cuz sun doesnt go down or if its cloudy at night) and I want a camera that I can learn with, but with this end purpose in mind.
anyways... I have no idea where to start looking, brands, anything....
1st I love digital photography, are the digital SLRs just as good, if not better, than the film cameras?? or would it be better to use film for this sort of thing?? because of my lifestyle and just overall how I am about my cameras I would love to go digital if possible...
and 2ndly what are your suggestions?? I was hoping price range wouldnt exeed $800 or i'll never gather enough money to start... but mind you thats canadian dollars... itd be like 6-700 american I think... around there... but yea... suggestions anyone??

Meg, as debbie says nikon d70 or canon eos 350 rebel xt, would both do you proud, if they are a litte expensive try the fuji fine pix s7000 if its still available in canada, it will do the job you want and is very capable for half the price of a d slr, most of the images in my gallery are s7000 though now I have athe canon, I still use the fuji for close up work

The aurora borealis requires long exposure, in tens of seconds at least. So far, the film camera is still the best tool to capture it. You did mention you have a "standard 35mm camera". If that camera have the bulb exposure feature, you are in business if you also already got a tripod and a shutter release. I have seen articles about that. Here is one:

and another:

Other DSLR photographers may recommend the appropriate camera for this purpose. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot!!! I'll defniately be looking into all of those cameras! thats great... I feel like a bit of a traitor to those of the film world, but I love digital I can do everything with my computer! anyways.. thanks much lots!! I'm always open to more suggestions, just really needed a place to start looking. I love your galleries!!!!! I have so many absolutely amazing pictures from my 35mm alone I really want to get into this further... I have nothing better to do with my life, might as well have some fun!

my 35mm is a $40 point and shoot with absolutely nothing other than a button to take the picture, 10s timer before taking picture and panoramic view... sadly its decided to retire and refuses to function at this point....
