Telephoto Zoom Lens

Hello Everyone,
Opinions please….I shoot with a Canon 20D and Elan 7, the largest lens I currently have is Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 IS but would like to get a 400-500mm lens. I have read various threads and reviews-still not sure. I’m considering the following lens: Canon 100-400F/4.5-5.6L IS, Sigma 50-500 F/4-6.3 or Tamron’s Di 200-500MM F/5-6.3. Canon is great with the IS but the additional 100mm to 500mm is a big consideration as well as the $$$ difference. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ken

Any of these lenses will perform decently, but the longer the zoom range, the less likely it is to perform well at the long end. If you own the 70-200/2.8 lens (which performs superbly), I believe you'll find all of these lenses to be a little bit of a disappointment, with the possible exception of the Canon, but still quite useable. My first choice would be the Canon, followed by the Tamron. I would choose another Sigma over the 50-500, even though its reviews are quite favorable. Doesn't Sigma make a lens in the same range (100-500 or so)?

HOWEVER - you need to be most concerned that your tripod/head will properly support a lens this long. The worst problem shooters have with long lenses is camera shake. It is very, very, difficult to get great shots with lenses over 300mm unless you own a superb tripod & head.

I don't think the generalization is true in the case of the Sigma 50-500. It is very sharp at 500mm, sharper than it is at the short end of its zoom, and sharper than their 170-500.

But like Michael said, over 300mm is too long to be handheld, unless the lens has Image/Optical Stabilization - EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and Sigma 80-400 f/4.5-5.6 EX OS HSM. These 2 can give decent results with a good 1.4x TC, giving you -560mm with image stabilization (but not AF).

Thanks for the comments. In general, I shoot from a tripod when possible even with shorter lens.

I heard the Sigma 50-500mm has some problems with the Canon. Have you experienced any?

  Hi
I m using EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. and found it really good. And due to its IS feature, I even can do handheld shooting. But it is heavy.
When I was searching for myself I found the Sigma 50-500 a little long.
and I had heard that , Sigma or tamaron lenses sometimes does not match the newly released models.
