Photography Question

Joe Terni

Digital to CDs then to prints.

Being relatively new to digital,I now want to take some of my shots off the computer and onto a CD and then get a processing shop to make prints for me from the CD.Realy this is my question. Some of my stored shots are say 3000 pixels(long),and range down to 900 pixels (long). Some have been cropped as well.So the original ratio is not the same after cropping. Is it OK to put this differing pixel size and ratio size etc onto one CD for prints from a processing shop? or should they be all uniform in pixel size etc? All are jpg as they told me they have to be anyhow, for them to process. So thats OK.Any help would be much appreciated for me being a novice digital person.

You know you don't have to burn your images to a CD to get prints made. You can transfer your files online via an FTP file directly to your lab, or upload them via the internet without an FTP.
To answer your pixel question - are you requesting the same size image from the different size files? You can certainly do this, but your images will vary in quality.

Michael thanks so much for a quick answer.I have phoned a number of local labs, but they all said to put onto CD and bring in.So if I can find a lab that I can tranfer my appropiate file to them online they can go from there.Thats the way I would like to do it,but didnt realise some have that service.Great to wisen me up to that.At this stage I only require all the prints being 4 by 6 inches.Anyhow all the same size prints off the one CD.So I appreciate what you say in that they do this but quality with be reduced for the less pixel ones.Thats great Michael,Thanks so much for that info.I will let you know how things pan out over the next couple of weeks for my first prints from digital.

I would check out MPix. . . you can upload your files fairly easily right from your computer and then order the sizes you want. .. it will give you a preview of how the crop will look so you know if you need to adjust or not!

If you go to a lab, rather than using an on line service, just transfer the files to a memory card, and bring the card in, most labs have the ability to read all types of cards, CF,SD,Memory Stick, etc., It beats burning a CD everytime you want prints. Have you tried printing yourself, I was using a lab until I updated my printer, then I printed out an 8x10 of a photo I had the lab print and I liked my printer version better!

NOW JOE, I AM NO EXPERT LIKE A LOT OF THESE GUYS- I HAVE 6 PHOTOGRAPHERS AND DO ALL THE EDIETING ON THE COMPUTER- BUT I NEVER MESS WITH THE ORIG SIZE TO MUCH. I BURN EVERY JOB TO CD- FOR I HAVE HEARD THAT IT IS HEALTHIER FOR THE COMPUTER, NOT TO STORE SO MUCH.
STORING AT ORIG SIZE ALSO ALLOWS US TO PRINT AT THE MAX. SIZE FOR THAT PIXEL RATIO.
I KNOW THAT WE CAN SEND THEM VIA E-MAIL, BUT SINCE WE BURN ON TO DISK, I USUALLY JUST GO IN MY SELF.THIS IS JUST THE WAY I DO IT NOW , BUT I'M LEARNING A LOT HERE ON BP. AND WE ARE HERE, NEW TO DIGITAL.( WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT AS TO BE FAIR)AND I PRINT ALOT HERE AS WELL- AND ON SITE WITH EPSON R300'S SO FAR EVERY ONE HAS BEEN REAL HAPPY- OH AND FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE- I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO RESIZE PROPERLY FOR USE IN E-MAILS, EBAY, AND POSTING- EVEN IN MY BOOKS - THINK THEY MAY COME OUT BETTER IF I RESIZED THEM MY SELF INSTEAD OF USEING THE PROGRAM TO DO IT FOR ME.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!!

Firstly I must apologise to Michelle,Mike and Debby in being a bit slow to get back to you all.Its Saturday downunder and I have been away from the computer for over 24 hours since I responded to Michael. Michelle,I am wondering if MPix is available down here? I will look into it.Mike I didnt realise you can transfer back to the memory card, this is all new to me.I will look into that great idea as well. Also I will look into a printer for myself down the track a bit.Debby I actually do store straight from the CF card onto a Drive 2,30Gig external storage device,so I do have all the original shots on that at the taken pixels. After this I usually transfer the shots I want at the time from that same CF card onto the computer and then crop etc and downsize for BP.Thanks to you all,you have been so helpful.I now know the different ways available for getting prints from the digital. You have all given me a lot to think about.I will let you all know in a few weeks how things have turned out... many thanks again.Joe

Just to add a little from yesterday.Mike what type of printer do you use,I mean if you have compared the lab print with yours and it is at least equal but even better, what more can one ask for.I will keep in mind also Debby`s Epson R as well ,seeing you are happy with that printer.Debby I am afraid I cannot help you with your question of resizing,I realy am pretty useless at present with the digital way of doing things(but not using the camera of course, thats real magic),but the computer, photoshops etc,I am still very early in my learning process. If none of us know the answer to your question on this discussion page, maybe a good idea to start another question rolling....there has to be someone out there on BP who can help with resizing.

  Joe,
I use a Canon Pixma 4000. Just to let you know I tried a lot of different papers,Kodak premire, Kodak Professional, Epson, Canon Glossy, Canon Photo Pro. and got the best results with the Canon Photo Pro. Epson also makes great printers.(All comparisons were based on only one lab.) My suggestion based on experience and expense with different paper would be to stay with the top paper made by the print brand you choose.Anothe suggestion would be for you to bring a file ( on a card ) and ask the retailer to print it out on the printers you are considering,You can be sure that all printers on display have the same paper loaded. By using the same picture you will be able to make a better comparison.
Besk of luck
Mike

Thank you Mike for that info re your printer.I appreciate what you are saying about getting the best paper for that printer brand.I will be looking into this fairly soon. Now the latest news is I got my son to take off 47 shots for me onto a CD last night(Look,I can take the shots and then put onto computer etc,but I am still learning regarding getting things onto CDs from the computer files....I was born way before PCs were invented!).Anyhow I took the disc down to the lab today and will have prints back tommorow...all going well that is! Now back to printers...To get the normal 4 by 6 prints I wanted today is about 50c each(Ozz money)...thats cheap, but when I asked for the next size up they were 2 buck 50 per print! Now the next size up from this was 5 buck 75 per print! So I settled for the 50c per print...Now I know why we need our own printers.I will get back on here tomorrow to let all you helpful folk know how things turn out for me in regards to different pixel size etc when I get my first prints back.

Great results!!But sorry about the slight delay in in getting back to you all(the weekend puts me days behind).Yes all bar one photograph came back as great prints. Now the duplicates of the same pic at 3000 pixels(long) and 800 pixels(long),looked at first to be identical clarity, but as Michael said they would vary in quality, and he was right, albeit only a small reduction in clarity for the lesser pixel one. This could only be seen comparing directly one pic next to the other, but yes there was a difference...I appreciate this was only on a 6 inch by 4 inch print,so with enlargements this becomes more magnified. The only pic out of about 50 that didnt work very well was a heavily cropped one(I only put it in to see what would happen anyhow). It was realy wonderful to get my first hard copies back looking pretty good as well,I am very happy. In the short term,it would be easier to get files sent to a lab as suggested. But I will down the track get myself a reasonable printer keeping in mind your suggestions. Thanks to you all again,I realy was a little worried if I had the pics at the right size etc for the lab to process, but you gave me great info, and I am over the moon with the results.Best regards to all...Joe.
