Photography Question

Bobby W. Curry

using flash for outdoor picture

I have the Digital Rebel 300D and a Sigma 500 DG ST Flash. I was shooting some prom pictures outdoor(daylight) using the flash. Sometime, the flash work and sometime it didn't work. The flash light show that the flash was charge and ready to flash, but it didn't go off. Some of my pictures were dark and some were nice. The flash work in auto and it didn't work in program mode. Could someone tell me what happen? Could it be the flash, not being fully compatible with the Digital Rebel? I was told to try the Canon 420 EX Flash.

  Sometimes this kind of erratic behavior results because the speedlight is not fully seated in the hotshoe. Make sure it is slid fully forward before tightening the locking ring.

There is a lot of electronic communication between the speedlight and camera, much more so than in the old days of simple non-dedicated flashes. This communication can get "bugged up" if the speedlight is powered on when it slides across the hot shoe contacts. Before mounting it, make sure the speedlight is off, then turn it on after it is securely attached to the camera. Turn it off before removing it, also.

  Are you in the Auto Mode? The camera may think there is sufficient light and does not pop the flash. Best to work in TV or AV mode. The cam measures the area and decides how much light to put out. It should fire at all times in these modes.
