  Hi Jo!

Unfortunately, this sort of thing can happen with inexperienced photographers, but it can present an excellent opportunity.

There's not a whole lot of money in this sort of editorial photography, but having a photo in the paper with a proper credit is excellent and presents you with the opportunity to build your "tear sheet" files. A "tear sheet" is a sample of something you had published and is requested by many publishers when approached about getting some work.

Call the paper, ask for an editor, and thank him/her for publishing your image. Then ask if you can get several copies of the paper. Tear out the image with you name on it and start your portfolio. If you cannot get original copies, xerox a copy the picture (make sure you name is on it).

Next time you have the opportunity to get published, always ask what they pay for usage and if you can get tear sheets. Building a portfolio of tear sheets is essential in the photography business and this is an excellent opportunity to get the ball rolling!!

Good luck!

I agree with Tony. It is not necessarily bad luck. You got published and, thereby, noticed. You got credit in the paper. I would ask for the copies, as Tony suggested, and start a photographic "scrap book" that can be used to your advantage in the future.

Keep the tear sheet, stay after the editor about getting paid for the picture. If they try the don't-call-back routine, many small papers are owned by bigger papers, so let somebody know there.
It's probably not going to be more than $25 that they pay for pictures, but you really should deal with flaky people without somehow showing that you're not going to let not following thru just fade because you got a credit line.

For a newcomer, getting published (with a credit line) is much more valuable to you than a modest fee.
It will open doors and present possibilities for future sales and/or assignments.
Take whatever they offer...and definately get a tear-sheet.

A tear sheet is your image "torn" out of the publication and placed into your portfolio. If it hasn't been published, no tear sheet exists as of yet. But, a cool lightning shot may be used in the future. When it is, remember the aforementioned advice.
